The Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) at the University of Tennessee at ChattanoogaCollegeofHealthEducationandProfessional Studiesinvitesapplicationsfor a 12month postdoctoral fellowship with an option of renewal in exercise physiology while also serving as the lab coordinator for the Health and Human Performance (HHP) Sports Lab beginning May 1 2025 or sooner based on the candidates availability.



Responsibilities

TheUniversityofTennessee atChattanooga (UTC)DepartmentofHealthandHumanPerformance invites applications for a 12month dual position of postdoctoral research fellow in exercise physiology and lab coordinator. The position emphasizes research and managing the sports lab as the primary responsibilities with secondary duties in teaching a limited number of online and hybrid classes each semester. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in assisting with and designing research projects in exercise physiology while overseeing daytoday lab operations including maintaining equipment providing student training and offering exceptional customer service to HHP Sports Lab clients. In addition the candidate will be responsible for teaching hybrid or online courses in exercise science during fall spring and summer terms. This position offers an exciting opportunity for collaborative communitybased research in exercise physiology in a city known for its vibrant running and cycling community while also giving the candidate teaching experience in a supportive academic environment.

Information about the HHP Sports Lab and Exercise and Health Sciences Program

The University of Tennessee at ChattanoogasHealth and Human Performance (HHP) Sports Lab provides students with handson research experiences in exercise science. In collaboration with local partners like Fast Break Athletics and Chattanooga Sports Commission students operate advanced equipment conduct fitness tests such as VO2 max and lactate threshold assessments and work directly with athletes from the Chattanooga community. This realworld experience prepares students for diverse careers while strengthening connections between the university and local fitness organizations. The lab is committed to advancing sports science research fostering student skill development and promoting community health.

TheExercise and Health Sciences (EHS) program at UTC equips students with essential knowledge and critical thinking skills for careers in exercise science and health. Through a mix of engaging courses handson learning and facultyled research students gain practical experience to apply in realworld settings. The program offers two tracks: the PreHealth Professional Track preparing students for graduate studies in areas like Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy and the EHS General Track for careers in cooperate wellness clinical exercise physiology and related fields. Faculty play a vital role in guiding students toward their chosen career paths.



Qualifications

Successfulcandidateswillpossessthefollowing requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in Exercise Science Exercise Physiology Kinesiology or a related field (completed by the start date).
  • Strong research background with evidence of scholarly productivity in exercise science.
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology and metabolic testing.
  • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of lab safety protocols and equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to manage lab operations including administering a variety of fitness assessment protocols scheduling inventory and equipment maintenance.

PreferredQualifications:

  • Research expertise in metabolic efficiency performance or lactate dynamics in endurance athletes
  • Exercise physiologyrelated research interest in sport performance and/or injury prevention research population is predominately endurance athletes (runners cyclists).
  • ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EPC)
  • Experience working with metabolic testing lactate analysis and body composition assessment.
  • Skill in training and supervising students in lab procedures and safety.
  • Experience with learning management systems (e.g. Canvas) and instructional delivery for hybrid/online courses.
