Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing courtinvolved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.
DJJs Division of Education and Rehabilitative Care is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Superintendent Senior. This is a key leadership role within the agency and is responsible for the overall management direction administration operations safety and security of the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center.
The Superintendent Senior is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment to ensure the protection of the citizens of the Commonwealth and the health and safety of the incarcerated juveniles and staff. In addition to effectively directing all administrative and operational functions of the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center this position will direct and coordinate the implementation of the facilitys behavior management and treatment programs and case management. The Superintendent Senior represents the Deputy Director Director and DJJ during meetings as requested attends DJJ Board meetings serves as an administrator on call and accomplishes special projects as assigned.
Essential Duties (not limited to):
Ensures that employees are trained in safety procedures and fosters a safe work environment. Works cooperatively and effectively with human resources and thirdparty administrators (UNIUM Workers Compensation Commission etc. to identify appropriate job modifications and to promote safe and prompt returntowork actions for subordinate employees.
Reviews policy and regulatory changes and provides explanations of the changes and instructions on implementation.
Provides accurate responses to technical questions and suggests references or other resources that can be used to acquire additional information.
Implement and monitor all JCC activities in compliance with established procedures. Develop and implement appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in the JCC to ensure compliance with the Departmental and Division policies regulations expectations and best practices.
Establish and chair regular meetings of facility department heads creating agendas gathering input from a wide array of facility staff concerning facility operations and recommendations for improvements and reporting noteworthy decisions and issues to the Deputy Director for Education and Rehabilitative Care.
Oversee the functioning of the Institutional Classification and Review Committee (ICRC) to ensure adherence to all relevant procedures and standards.
Monitor the individualized Comprehensive Reentry Case Planning (CRCP) process for committed youth by meeting all requirements in designated procedures. CRCPs shall be comply with the designated format and address risks and needs identified by the assessments. Submit quarterly reports describing results of this activity.
Attend and serve on inter and intraagency committees/work groups that impact the agencys mission and the successful operations of Rehabilitative Care; provide relevant feedback and input to ensure agency decision making focuses on the best interest of residents families and staff and is congruent with the evidencebased and traumainformed best practices
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of federal state local and public laws and ordinances relating to criminal justice.
Considerable experience applying the principles/practices of organizational management including personnel planning management analysis and supervision.
Considerable experience working with and maintaining relationships with staff at all levels public official and other agencies
Demonstrated ability to oversee the development evaluation and administration of a variety of diverse programs within the unit and with other agencies is important.
Experience with documenting performance planning and evaluations
Knowledge of MS Office programs and creating quarterly reports
Additional Considerations
Extensive supervisory experience in a juvenile court / juvenile correctional center setting and budgeting experience in public sector are preferred.
