Summary: We seek a candidate with demonstrated expertise in movement ecology habitat use and selection and/or population ecology.
Classification Summary:
The department applies traditional and emerging scientific methods to understand the ecology of fish and wildlife and the communities they inhabit. This knowledge helps make more informed conservation and management decisions as well as to further societys understanding of the structure and function of ecological systems. The department strives for excellence in research teaching and outreach with efforts focused on the diverse ecosystems of the American Southwest as well as on issues occurring nationally and internationally.
Classification Standard Duties:
The Department of Fish Wildlife and Conservation Ecology strives for excellence in teaching research and outreach in ecology conservation and management of aquatic and terrestrial resources with an emphasis on ecosystems in southwestern North America.
Required Education Experience Certification/License Equivalency
Ph.D. (awarded by hire date) in Wildlife Biology Ecology Zoology Biological Sciences or related fields.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to: communicate with various diverse audiences (e.g. stakeholders policymakers and academics); publish research in appropriate outlets; develop and sustain external funding; advise both undergraduate and graduatelevel students.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Appointment is 75 research 25 teaching.
The Department seeks a candidate to establish a competitively funded research program in avian ecology to address applied questions related to conservation and management of birds with relevance to the state of New Mexico as well as regionally nationally and internationally. We seek a candidate with demonstrated expertise in movement ecology habitat use and selection and/or population ecology. This is a tenure track 9month position with an allocation of effort that includes the expectation of missionoriented research teaching and outreach. The successful candidate will show a commitment to excellence in research and teaching including specific evidence of: 1 interest and expertise in ornithology with an emphasis on population ecology and management or related areas; 2. potential to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels on topics such as ornithology gamebird/avian ecology wildlife management as well as lowerlevel courses.
Success in this position requires excellence and expertise that strengthens the universitys mission to engage students community members and affiliated scientists on issues related to wildlife management and conservation. The faculty member will establish a nationallyrecognized research program that will encompass clear tangible benefits to management conservation and policy. In addition the successful candidate will be able to collaborate with diverse and multicultural faculty in the FWCE department and broader NMSU community. Although no formal extension duties are outlined in the position outreach and service to the department university and the public are essential aspects of this position. Excellence in teaching is required with an anticipated teaching load of 23 courses annually. Advising of both undergraduate and graduate students is expected. The position will also foster collaborations and participate in activities and on research teams that support the work of the Center for Excellence in Sustainable Food and Agricultural Systems (CESFAS.
The FWCE Department is part of the College of Agricultural Consumer and Environmental Sciences and is home to 11 faculty 40 graduate students and 150 undergraduate students. The departments is vibrant and expanding. Please visit for more information on the department.
