The mission of the Louisiana Veterans Homes is to primarily serve the Veterans population of Louisiana through the provision of medical restorative and rehabilitative services in an atmosphere of respect and compassion. The primary objective of home is to provide quality nursing care to eligible veterans with the ultimate goal of returning the veterans to the highest possible levels of physical and mental capacity.

This position is located in the Recreation/Activities Department of the Northeast LA Veterans Home in Monroe Louisiana. This is a fulltime position.

Conduct therapeutic recreational activities in group settings and individual settings. Directs and organizes sports games arts and crafts. and exercise to encourage socialization and develop confidence needed to participate in group activities.

Responsible for planning organizing directing and evaluating patient progress/treatment plans. Prepares progress charts and periodic reports for medical staff and other members of the treatment team reflecting patients reactions and evidence of progress or regression.

Organizes and conducts special therapeutic recreation outings such as ball games rodeos sightseeing picnics museums and field trips. Performs CNA services for residents when away from facility.

Assists in supervising coordinating and training volunteers students workers senior workers and CNA recreation therapy aide.

Escorts resident to and from activities.

Supervises resident worker .

Assists in maintaining inventory/equipment/materials.

Assists in developing monthly Activity Calendars.

Performs other related duties as required.

**Note regarding the advertised pay range:The advertised maximum amount listed is the maximum salary a person can make while in this title/level over their career andnot the maximum amount we are allowed to pay a new hire.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience as a teacher instructor or counselor in a recreational program plus one year of experience in recreation therapy; OR

A bachelors degree in a rehabilitation recreation or therapy field a physical education field or psychology plus one year of experience in recreation therapy; OR

Possession of certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist in accordance with the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification plus one year of experience in recreation therapy.

Job Concepts

Experienced.

Supervision Received:
Broad direction from a higherlevel therapeutic recreation specialist or higherlevel manager or administrator.

Supervision Exercised:
Functional over lowerlevel professional and nonprofessional therapeutic recreation staff volunteers or interns.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 1 by independent responsibility for planning organizing directing conducting and evaluating therapeutic recreational services for special populations.

Differs from a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 3A by the absence of firstline supervisory responsibilities over lowerlevel professional and nonprofessional therapeutic recreation staff.

Differs from a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 3B by the absence of providing certified clinical oversight of a specific unit as required by legislation.

Examples of Work

Directs and organizes such activities as sports dramatics games and arts and crafts to assist patients to develop interpersonal relationships to socialize effectively and to develop confidence needed to participate in group activities.

Instruct clients in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing concentration and other activities.

Regulates content of program in accordance with patients or clients capabilities needs and interests.

Instruct clients in calisthenics stretching and limbering exercises and individual and group sports.

Counsels and encourages clients to develop leisure activities.

Organizes and conducts special outings such as ball games sightseeing or picnics to make patients aware of available recreational resources.

Prepares progress charts and periodic reports for medical staff and other members of treatment team reflecting clients reactions and evidence of progress or regression.

May supervise and conduct inservice training of other staff members review their assessments and program goals and consult with them on selected cases.

May train groups of volunteers and students in techniques of therapeutic recreation.

May serve as consultant to other state agencies educational institutions and community health programs.

May prepare and submit requisitions for needed supplies.

May be required to provide some diversionary recreation or creative arts activities and services from time to time or on a continuing basis in addition to medically prescribed therapy activities.
