This opportunity is only available to students who have been awarded Federal Work Study specifically to work with Finger Lakes ReUse Inc a nonprofit in the local Ithaca area.

Staff Position Description Retail Assistant
Position Summary:

Finger Lakes ReUse values safety resourcefulness and respect above all else and the Retail Assistant is responsible for supporting these values and carrying out all aspects of retail operations including these 5 key tasks:

  • Deliver excellent customer service demonstrating respect and creating positive interactions with customers and donors.
  • Provide support and demonstrate resourcefulness in the sorting cleaning assessing pricing and merchandising of product.
  • Accurately and professionally perform cash register sales.
  • Safely load unload and move furniture building materials and other heavy merchandise.
  • Contribute to positive working relationships with coworkers including employees volunteers and trainees.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds through the workday following safe lifting practices.
  2. Ability to work and problem solve independently without direct supervision.
  3. Ability to communicate in a positive friendly and helpful manner with customers donors employees volunteers and trainees.
  4. Ability to conduct sales transactions use computerized cash register software with keyboards and mouse.
  5. Ability to legibly write in and complete forms perform basic arithmetic and follow written and verbal instructions.
  6. Ability to remain in one station for 23 hours at a time.
  7. Ability to load/unload pallets and other equipment used for transporting product.
  8. Ability to move about the work place amongst shelving to assist customers handle merchandise on high and low shelves etc.
  9. Basic computer literacy
  • Minimum education not required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. General knowledge of clothing and other textiles including fabric types brands and resale value
  2. Demonstrated proficiency in merchandising clothing and other household goods.
  3. Ability to work in an environment containing a higher than average amount household allergen (i.e. dust and pet dander)

Finger Lakes ReUse operates two locations open daily to the public (the Triphammer ReUse MegaCenter 2255 N Triphammer Rd and the Ithaca ReUse Center 214 Elmira Rd). All locations feature quality household items furniture refurbished electronics building materials and more at affordable prices. Purchases help support community programs including the ReSET job training program eCenter computer refurbishment and repair program and the ReUse Materials Access Program providing materials to local people facing crisis.
