Purpose
India faces a multifaceted challenge as itaims to become a developed country by 2047 while ensuring food and nutritionalsecurity and meeting its netzero emissions goals. Central to these ambitionsare the Agriculture and allied Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors.These sectors are crucial because theyare not only highly vulnerable to climate change but also significantcontributors to it. To reach Indias extensive developmental and environmentalgoals a fundamental reassessment and evolution of the AFOLU sector isnecessary involving a comprehensive approach to food systems transformation.
Keeping this complex challenge in mind CEEW seeks to develop sustainablepathways for Indias food systems to enable a netzero journey. In this context CEEW seeks a ResearchAnalyst(s) to expand its capacity for conducting cuttingedge research on sustainablefood systems focusing on one/ multiple areas such as sustainable agriculturecrop and diet diversification sustainable and resilient dairy and livestocksector and the potential of alternative proteins (AP) in Indias food systemtransformation.
The successful applicant will assist the teammembers in undertaking robust quantitative analysis. In addition to the dutiesand responsibilities outlined below the Research Analyst should be preparedas and when necessary to take on additional responsibilities and respond toevents and developments that cannot be anticipated easily.
Jobduties and accountabilities
Research
Independently manage allocated workstreams onquantitative and quantitative applied research on varied food system issues.Such workstreams include but are not limited to (i) identification of optimalresearch question(s) (ii) designing the research approach/framework (iii) ifrequired development and of primary surveys (this includes designingthe questionnaires survey monitoring coordinating with field staffs andanalysis of the survey data) (iv) if required systematic literature reviews(v) if required conducting stakeholder consultations (vi) conducting therelevant analyses using appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative tools (e.g.MS Excel STATA Open LCA/SimaPro Vensim/ STELLA etc. and (vii) presentingthe analyses in a coherent narrative in different formats
Travel to field sites whenever necessary toconduct fieldwork including focus group discussions interviews meetingstraining or gather primary information
Proactively supporting team in effectivelyoperationalizing the CEEWs Arc of Learning
Regularly track policy measures taken by thegovernment and its implementation status related to sustainable agriculture andsustainable food systems in India and the Global South.
Write highquality research reports publishin leading peerreviewed journals and generate other knowledge products for thedifferent audience such as blogs policy briefs in regular intervals
Establishing and managing relationships withproject counterparts from CEEWs partners
Project/programme Assistance
Support the senior researchers inconceptualising new projects development of highimpact research proposalsand applications for research and general donor funding
Support effective outreach of research outputsthrough coordination with the outreach team engagement with a broader networkof stakeholders and concerned policymakers
Participate in relevant conferencesworkshops training programmes for a comprehensive understanding ofdevelopments relevant to sustainable agriculture and allied sector andalternate proteins.
Support senior team members for importantmeetings and sessions prepare notes and conduct followups as required
Participate in weekly team meetings and assistwith preparing minutes and chairing the weekly meeting
Selection Criteria and Key skills
Mastersdegree in environmental management/data science / public policy/ foodsystems/sustainable engineering/ agricultural or ecologicaleconomics/econometrics/ system dynamics or any other relevant field relevantfor food system transformation.
A minimum of two years ofrelevant research experience in sustainable agriculture livestock and food systemsresearch is expected. Candidates who havedeveloped relevant specialist skills will be given a strong preference.
Someexperience in conducting Life Cycle Assessment/ Integrated Assessmentmodelling/ system dynamic modelling in the AFOLU sector would be preferred.
Analyticalskills and knowledge of mixed methods qualitative and quantitative researchmethods relevant for food systems analysis strategic planning GHGaccounting from AFOLU sector political economy analysis stakeholderengagement impact evaluation etc.
Projectmanagement skills to independently manage research workstreams
Familiaritywith IPCC Guidelines on GHG inventory calculations food and agricultureissues policy areas and consumer trends
Strongcommunication skills for effective efficient and adaptive verbal and writtencommunication and active listening along with experiencein managing stakeholders conducting workshops convenings etc. (preferred)
Abilityto use MS Office application suite
Desirable: Relevant publications inpeerreviewed journals/book chapters
Desirable skills: R/Stata/Python (any one mandatory) other statistical software; Vensim STELLA AnyLogic QGIS ArcGIS (preferred) and environmental and landusemodelling life cycle assessment tools Impact evaluation tools
