The Department of Anthropology College of Social Sciences University of Hawaii at Manoa (Honolulu Hawaii) invites applicants for the position of Instructor (I2. This is a nontenure track fulltime 9month faculty appointment to begin August 1 2025 subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

We are seeking a broadly trained archaeologist whose focus is on laboratory and field methods. Archaeologists with experience and expertise in the Pacific Region are preferred though candidates with experience in North America and Asia will also be considered. There is currently a pressing need in the State of Hawaii to grow the professional archaeological workforce. We are particularly interested in applicants who can also offer instruction in cultural heritage legislation and preservation zooarchaeology archaeobotany and/or quantitative methods although other methodological specialties complementing existing faculty strengths will also be considered.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in archaeological laboratory methods archaeological practicum field mapping and other specialized laboratory courses that fall under the selected candidates expertise.
  2. Oversee archaeological laboratories and collection curation archaeological collections compliance and repatriation of the departments collections to appropriate repositories.
  3. Advise students; mentor and train students to conduct archaeological research within local communities and/or to pursue local careers in Cultural Resource Management.
  4. Contribute to the ongoing growth of the Applied Archaeology program and act as a liaison with the community partners.
  5. Assist in curriculum development and assessment instruments.
  6. Engage in departmental university and community service.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. MA in Anthropology or Archaeology from a college or university of recognized standing or foreign equivalent with major work in archaeological laboratory methods archaeological practicum experience and/or field mapping.
  2. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  3. Demonstrated experience working with and applying NAGPRA.
  4. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses effectively direct group discussions and provide laboratory supervision.
  5. Demonstrated ability and willingness to mentor and train students to conduct archaeological research within local communities and/or to pursue careers in Cultural Resource Management.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. PhD in Anthropology or Archaeology from a college or university if recognized standing or foreign equivalent.
  2. Geographical expertise that includes the Pacific region Asia and/or the North American Pacific Coast.
  3. Cultural Resource Management or lab management experience in Hawaiian and/or Pacific archaeology.
  4. Expertise in (but not limited to) zooarchaeology archaeobotany and/or quantitative methods in anthropology.
  5. Knowledge of U.S. federal and State of Hawaii historic preservation laws.
  6. Interest in contributing to archaeological field schools in the state or the Pacific.
  7. A demonstrated ability to integrate community members and other stakeholders in research and education.
