What Youll Do
Weapon Tooling System Engineers function as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) to assess system health and performance and provides overall technical responsibility for operability and reliability of Special Tooling which includes overall cognizance of assigned Special Tooling systems and technical support of line management safety responsibilities for ensuring continued operational readiness. The Weapon Tooling System Engineer works in conjunction with the Special Tooling Program for the assigned Special Tooling. They are responsible for troubleshooting assessing and tracking feedback on existing designs for continuous improvement throughout the entire life cycle of the Special Tooling in support of the mission of the Pantex Plant. Weapon Tooling System Engineers troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with Special Tooling in cooperation with other related disciplines.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Resolve Tooling Problem reports for existing Special Tooling and make determinations to recover damaged or defective tooling and equipment that is being used to support manipulate or evaluate nuclear weapons and weapon related material
- Track and trend operations maintenance and repair activities for existing Special Tooling
- Technical authority for safety and security determinations related to Special Tooling designed to prevent and/or mitigate high order consequences worker safety concerns and security concerns
- Requirements for these Special Tools are flowed down from the Documented Safety Analysis Nuclear Explosive Safety Rules Process Hazard Analyses for Explosive Safety and other implementing documents for contractor requirements
- Observe and assess Special Tooling for system operability reliability and material condition
- Make recommendations and initiate actions to correct problems related to assigned systems
- Engineers will be expected to support the oncall rotation
- Present information clearly and effectively through the oral and written word

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA and 4years of relevant experiencefrom an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico the Washington Accord or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET
- OR a Masters degree in mechanical engineering with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA and 2 years of relevant experience
- OR a PhD in mechanical engineering with a minimum 3.5/4.0 cumulative GPA and 0 years of relevant experience
- Beyond four years from graduation engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
- In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related science two 2 years jobrelated and at least one 1 year nuclear experience or a DOE O 426.2 alternative)
- DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment
- In the interim newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities (Ref. DOE O 426.2
Preferred Job Requirements
- Knowledge of the Pantex Special Tooling Program with a preferred knowledge in design and analysis of Special Tooling at Pantex
- Pantex Tooling and Machine Design Engineer qualification
- Knowledgeable in respective technical standards principles theories concepts and techniques
- Basic CREO and mechanical analysis experience
- Knowledgeable in mechanical manufacturing methods and welding techniques
- Knowledgeable in inspection and testing methods including but not limited to nondestructive testing calibration and preventive maintenance of mechanical tooling and systems
- Demonstrated technical capabilities leadership and work ethic
- Ability to work in a project team environment and communicate well with other disciplines customers and stakeholders
- Ability to follow procedures and work within a rigorous work process
- Tracking and trending of issues using metrics to determine system health
- Understanding of Conduct of Engineering Conduct of Operations and the Special Tooling Program at Pantex
- Good written and oral communications skills
- Capable of handling classified information

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
