North Smithfield School DepartmentPosition Title:CustodianReports to:Facilities Manager Building AdministratorApproved by:Superintendent of SchoolsRevised: July 2011; April 2014POSITION SUMMARY:Provides students with a safe clean healthy and functional school building environment and grounds in which to learn and develop.a.Assumes responsibility and/or management as assigned for the above.b.Provide these services in a confidential and responsible nature.SALARY & WORK SCHEDULE:Per NSASSP Contract. Twelvemonth position.QUALIFICATIONS: (See also Qualification Requirements)1)Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician certifying that the person can meet the physical demands of the position.2)A willingness to assist supervisors in attaining the goals for cleanliness of a building.3)Demonstrated aptitude for successful fulfillment of assigned performance responsibilities.4)Such addition or modification to the above as the Superintendent may deem important.REPORTS TO AND IS SUPERVISED BY:Building PrincipalFacilities ManagerTERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:Full time per NSASSP Contract.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:1)Perform custodial functions keep building and premises including sidewalks driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times as assigned by the Head Custodian and/or Facilities Manager and/or Principal.a.Items for cleaning include the following although not all inclusive: windows chairs desks tables chalkboards walls signs building face radiators waste containers floors paper dispensers sinks toilets urinals corridors classroom floors and fixtures drinking fountains counters light fixtures mirrors rugs doors furniture and equipment according to the schedule provided and as necessary.2)Perform any and all activities related to the cleaning of the buildings. a.Activities include sweeping dusting mopping washing vacuuming treating spraying removing collecting applying and such other activities as necessary to maintain the building in a clean and enhanced appearance according to the schedule provided and as necessary. 3)Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Principal or Facilities Manager.4)Perform grounds keeping chores as necessary to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition. a.Activities include sweeping raking lawn mowing washing removing collecting and such other activities as necessary to maintain the grounds in a clean and enhanced appearance according to the schedule provided and as necessary.5)Assume responsibility for the general security of the building: the opening and closing of the building each school day and determine before leaving that all doors and windows are secure and all lights except those left on for safety reasons are turned off. Check daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly. Check doors during the course of the day or shift to insure they are closed at all times.6)Assist in checking the general fire safety of the building. Know the alarm system and help conduct an annual check of the fire equipment.7)Maintain awareness of all water shut offs in the building in case of emergency.8)Maintain awareness of all electrical panels in the building in case of an emergency.9)Perform snow removal tasks: shovel plow if trained and requested and/or sands walkways driveways parking areas and steps as appropriate. Operate snow removal equipment as trained (walkbehind snow blowers snow removal sweeper tractor with or without bucket and siton snow blower.10)Report immediately to the Principal and/or Facilities Manager major repairs needed or any damage to school property. Note any significant occurrence or maintenance items regarding repairs required in the building in the schools SchoolDude system.11)Respond to emergency situations in school buildings.12)Remain on the school premises during school hours and during nonschool hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the Principal and/or the custodial supervisor.13)Keep an inventory of custodial supplies equipment and fuel on hand and order needed replacements far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the operation of the schools.14)Maintains an inventory of school supplies if requested.15)Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash rubbish and waste.16)Provide input to budget both short and longterm as requested.17)Perform other custodial functions as assigned or needed.18)In addition to the above requirements any other qualifications and/or assignments by the Facilities Manager Building Principal and Superintendent which they may find appropriate.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Occasional exposure to hot cold wet humid or windy conditions caused by the weather. Level 3 is required for this position which is over 30 days up to and including 3 months.APTITUDES:Specific capacities/abilities of an individual in order to learn or perform adequately in a task or job duty.
