Job Title: Metallography Technician

What Youll Do

Handson work includes preparation of samples for metallographic examination and mechanical properties testing. Activities include sawing mounting grinding and polishing of samples of various materials (both radiological/nonradiological) for followon microstructural evaluation using various tools such optical microscopes and other analytical instruments. Use of various chemicals for cleaning and etching samples prior to microscopy. Samples are evaluated for mechanical properties using hardness testers tensile testing and other thermomechanical and thermophysical instruments.

Other work type activities include taking inventory of materials (i.e. metals chemicals equipment etc. handling/packaging of wastes (radiological/nonradiological) and housekeeping and/or cleaning of work areas.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Associate degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • OR a High school diploma with a minimum of 6years of relevant experience

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Experience with various types of metallographic preparation equipment as well as various microscopy techniques
  • Familiarity with principles of chemical laboratory safety and operation
  • Willing to work with beryllium and radiological hazards
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications/systems to record and manipulate data access technical and information resources and create correspondence as necessary
  • Completion of training in processing and/or handling hazardous materials
  • Ability/desire to conduct handson work in a laboratory setting

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required candidate must complete a counterintelligencescope polygraph pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
