Job Description

ROLE: ESL Teacher Residential Juniors Program at UBC
PROGRAM: ILSC Summer Juniors Residential Program at UBC

REPORTS TO: Academic Manager Residential Juniors Program at UBC
DURATION OF PROGRAM: 46 weeks June 29 to August 10 2025 (PreTraining between June 20June 27 2025

ILSC Vancouver Juniors Residential Programat UBC is seeking qualified and dynamic ESL Teachers available to work parttime in a friendly fastpaced environment.

Our students are ages 1017. Teachers prepare lessons designed to increase students language skills their accuracy and fluency appropriate to a broad range of situations and needs and in accordance with the ILSC Curriculum Guidelines and Course Outlines. High quality delivery is expected. This is a parttime fixedterm position consisting of 15 instructional hours per week.

The schedule timeline and hourly requirements are as follows:

  • Preprogram staff training will take place between June 20 2025 to June 27 2025
  • Your weekly work schedule will consist of five mornings per week MondayFriday from 9:00 AM12:00 PM
  • Remuneration is $31.40 $32.44 per hour plus a 25 preptime premium

Duties and Responsibilities

Teachers prepare lessons designed to increase students language skills their accuracy and fluency appropriate to a broad range of situations and needs and in accordance with the ILSC Curriculum Guidelines and Course Outlines. High quality delivery is expected.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching 15 hours of English lessons over a fiveday week (Monday Friday mornings from 9:00 AM12:00 PM)
  • Eliciting students interests and language needs in an organized way
  • Preparing lessons using recommended resource materials (or substitutes own resources in consultation with the Academic Manager)
  • Creating an atmosphere that encourages all students equally in selfexpression selfreflection cooperation and leadership
  • Evaluating student progress and completing academic records as required by the Academic Manager (i.e. class records of attendance student reports and progress reports)
  • Cooperating with the Academic Manager and on occasions with third party agents colleagues from language agencies and accrediting Inspectors in the observation and evaluation of lessons
  • Assisting with the welcome induction and testing of students on the first morning of class
  • Attending staff meetings for briefing and discussion of academic and welfare matters

The teacher is expected to use a range of modern and traditional language learning techniques and methodology including the following:

  • Building students vocabulary acquisition for formal and informal situations e.g. dialogues discussion roleplays outings
  • Introducing practicing and reviewing language structures (grammar) using a communicative approach
  • Developing communication strategies such as initiating maintaining closing of verbal interactions across a wide spectrum of situations drawn from daily life
  • Increasing communicative skills through appropriate question and answer techniques presentations decisionmaking offering feedback to others analyzing and evaluating situations negotiating debating etc.
  • Shaping pronunciation and speech production towards natural English
  • Supporting and encouraging students to selfcorrect
  • Evaluating and offering feedback to the students in ways that increase their selfconfidence in using English
  • Incorporating social media and planning ageappropriate language learning activities to engage and motivate students
  • Other duties as assigned by the Academics Manager

Essential Qualifications Skills and Attributes:

All ESL teachers at the ILSC Juniors Residential Program at UBC must possess the following qualifications:

  • A completedBachelors degree
  • A completed TESL certificate recognized by TESL Canada (or equivalent e.g. CELTA)
  • Experience teaching and working with students aged 1017 years old
