Position Summary
Are you passionate about guiding students toward academic and professional achievement The Fowler College of Business (FCB) at San Diego State University is seeking a dedicated Academic Advisor to join our Center for Student Success (CSS). This role offers an exciting opportunity to provide individual and group advising to a diverse population of approximately 8000 undergraduate students in Business Administration. As part of a dynamic team you will help shape policies and procedures that enhance student success and support SDSUs Coordinated Care Advising network.
Key Responsibilities:
- Academic Advising: Provide academic advising to current prospective and former students as well as graduation candidates.
- Student Engagement: Conduct individual appointments group advising sessions virtual meetings and respond to inquiries via email phone and in person.
- AtRisk Student Support: Support students at risk academically identifying challenges and connecting them with appropriate campus resources.
- Policy Development: Contribute to the development and implementation of Center for Student Success policies and procedures.
- Event Support: Assist in organizing and staffing student success events.
- Flexible Availability: Participate in evening and weekend activities as needed to support student engagement.

Position Information
- This is a fulltime 1.0 timebase) benefits eligible permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
The Fowler College of Business (FCB) consists of one school and four academic departments (Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy Finance Management Information Systems Management and Marketing) a Dean an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs an Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs a College Operations Manager/Director of Resource Management a Director of Marketing & Communications a Director for Graduate Programs a Director for Undergraduate Programs a Director for the Career Management Center a Director for Assessment and a Managing Director for the Wendy Gillespie Center for Advancing Global Business.
The Fowler College of Business offers a variety of programs including an undergraduate and graduate degree in business administration and specialized masters program. The college also houses several centers: the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate the Center for Advancing Global Business the Corporate Governance Institute the Institute for Inclusion and Diversity the Center for Integrated Marketing Communication and the Aztec Consulting Center which are critical for the implementation of its strategic plan.
The Fowler College of Business has over 200 full and parttime academic employees and more than 45 clerical and technical employees.
FCB is an instructional division of San Diego State University administered by the Dean. The Deans Office is responsible for the creation implementation and continued support of the instructional research and development processes in the College.
The Center for Student Success (CSS) within the College provides all academic and informational advising for current prospective and former students and graduation candidates in the Undergraduate Program. It also focuses on students experiencing academic difficulty and those participating in special programs. It provides assistance to students in filling out academic forms and petitions and in understanding university and college policies requirements and procedures. The unit is responsible for implementing all policies procedures and decisions made regarding currently attending Business majors. The unit coordinates the following: primary commencement function (undergraduate for approximately 1800 students/8500 guests); undergraduate academic advising tutoring study abroad incoming first year and transfer student orientation among others.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a fouryear college or university in one of the behavioral sciences public or business administration or a jobrelated field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a yearforyear basis.
Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A masters degree in a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Key Qualifications
- Working knowledge of barriers for students from underrepresented groups.
- Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse range of students staff and faculty.
- Ability to recognize multicultural multisexed and multiaged value systems and work accordingly.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and effectively presenting to audiences of varying backgrounds and group sizes.
- Experience in student advising or supporting students in an academic or educational setting.
- Experience explaining and interpreting academic policies and procedures in various communication formats including inperson phone video conferencing and email.
- Familiarity with general education and graduation requirements in higher education particularly within public university systems preferred.
- Three years of experience in student services academic advising admissions registrar functions or a related area within higher education preferred.
- Masters degree preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5083 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education experience and qualifications the candidate brings to the position internal equity and the hiring departments fiscal resources.
