Job Description

ZION PARK DISTRICT

Job Title: Swim Instructor

Status of Employment: PartTime/Seasonal/Hourly

Supervision of Employment: Aquatics Director

General Statement of Duties: Swim Instructors are primarily responsible for teaching swimming techniques safety rules and water activities to individuals and groups. They are also responsible for the safety of students and providing accurate assistance. They take attendance and fill out any required paperwork. They follow all pool policies and other assigned tasks.

Distinguishing Features of the Position: Follow swimming lesson curriculum for different ages levels. Adjust to a wide variety of swimming levels with students in a group or individually. Enforce policies and rules of the pool. Be able to work under stressful conditions and follow through with emergency plan action when necessary. Be able to react in a moment notice to emergency situations. Be able to attend weekly staff meetings. Be able to stand sit swim or walk in the sun and water for varying time durations. Maintain good physical conditioning in order to instruct swimming lessons. The position requires schedule flexibility to accommodate for evening and weekend responsibilities.

  • Ability to understand verbal instructions.
  • Ability to reason weigh the facts and make a proper judgment proficient decisionmaking skills.
  • Observational and analytical skills to assess students abilities and tailor instruction methods and strategies accordingly.
  • Interpersonal skills to build rapport with students and their parents or guardians encouraging a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Problemsolving skills to identify obstacles in students progress and develop appropriate solutions or alternative teaching techniques.

Safety

Employees are responsible for understanding the importance of safety issues rules policies and to comply with all rules and policies.

  • Job would require exposure to a wide range of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Report on unsafe conditions and make safety recommendations.
  • Work to achieve goals and objectives of the Safety Committee of Zion Park District.

Requirements

Qualifications and Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the job requires excellent swimming skills. Must be 16 years or older. Knowledge of different swimming strokes. Strong people and communication skills. Ability to work with diverse age groups. A high level of patience in dealing with beginners and fearful individuals. Ability to assess and resolve problems ensuring the safety of all participants.

Essential Functions Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report to work on time dressed in uniform and ready to work.
  • Instructing and demonstrating swimming techniques and strokes effectively.
  • Ensuring the safety of all students before during and after swimming lessons.
  • Evaluating student performance providing feedback and guiding students on their progress.
  • Maintaining records of attendance progress reports and issue completion certificates.
  • Ensuring all aquatic equipment is in good condition and stored correctly after use.
  • Answer publics questions in person and on the phone when necessary.
  • Attend staff training before the opening season and attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Maintain the facility by doing maintenance work when necessary.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with the Aquatics Director headguard other staff and public (daily).
  • Give appropriate and positive directions to participants.
  • Inform the Supervisor of any problems with the public that arise and do preventative guarding.
  • Punch in and out on Payroll System.
  • Be responsible for finding a substitute for shift.
  • Responsible for understanding the importance of safety issues at the district for adhering to the District Safety Manual and associated policies and working to achieve the goals of the safety committee.
  • Assist with keeping the pool facility clean and safe.
  • React to weather condition changes and inform the Supervisor immediately to make sure participants are safe.
  • Follow all safety procedures that are required at the pool facility.
  • Functions in a flexible manner to adjust to the daily schedule or assist where needed.
Salary Description
$15.00$16.00/hr.
