The University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Natural Sciences Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit invites applications for a permanent fulltime 11month) tenuretrack faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor (F4 to begin approximately August 1 2025 or as soon thereafter as possible subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

We are searching for a strategic systems thinker with strong interpersonal skills and significant experience administering basic and applied conservation biology programs to serve in a leadership role with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU)https://pcsuhawaii. The Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit is a University of Hawaii research unit focusing on basic and applied research on restoration and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity in Hawaii and the Pacific. Collaboration is at the core of PCSUs 50 year history of successfully bringing together a broad range of state and federal agencies nongovernmental organizations private foundations community groups and private landowners to achieve ecosystem level outcomes. With an annual budget in excess of 30 million dollars PCSU administers over 40 projects and employs more than 350 people across Hawaii.

Duties and Responsibilities
80 FTE (Research 50 & Service 30

  1. Provide administrative and research support for PCSU projects.
  2. Serve as coPI on selected projects.
  3. Lead teambased development of programs that support and advance PCSUs mission. Topics include basic and applied conservation biology and adaptive management for native endangered and invasive plant and animal species and ecosystems. More specifically:
    1. Coordinate support and promote applied research activities across PCSU projects; lead development of a standardized data collection and management framework across PCSU projects.
  4. Lead analysis and publication of past and current PCSU project data.
  5. Expand interdisciplinary research activities.
  6. Enhance research engagement between PCSU projects and specialized expertise within the UH system.
  7. Improve student access to PCSU projects through Internships research training programs.
20 FTE (Teaching)
  1. Teach one course persemester (two per year).
  2. Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; and serve on graduate student thesis and dissertation committees.
  3. Facilitate engagement with students in research on topics of their personal interests.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. An earned Ph.D. or terminal degree in Biological Science or a relevant field of study from a college or university of recognized standing.
  2. A minimum of four 4 years of service at the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent including demonstrated administrative and management experience of multiple simultaneous projects and staff.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of applied and basic conservation biology through research and management.
  4. A track record of publishing peerreviewed research.
  5. Demonstrated strong leadership communication and diplomacy skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse constituencies.
  6. Demonstrated ability to teach biology botany conservation biology or related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  7. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated strong data science and analytical skills with a focus on elucidating the relationship between driving forces and outcomes in large scale complex multivariate systems.
  2. Demonstrated experience with successful project implementation in different cultures demonstrating cultural awareness and consideration of human dimensions inconservationfocused natural resources management.
  3. Demonstrated experiences with and/or commitment to mentorship and training of undergraduate and graduate students and early career professionals.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal regulations and regulatory processes related to conservation permitting working with protected species and compliance for grant and contract management.
  5. Awareness of and participation in national and international conservation frameworks and agreements.
