Job Description

The VirginiaMaryland College of Veterinary Medicines DVM program is located on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Virginia. Founded in 1978 the goal of the DVM program is to empower students to achieve their goals find success and make inspiring contributions to the veterinary profession. Reporting to the Dean and serving as a member of the Executive Board the Associate Dean for Professional Programs oversees the DVM program. The Associate Dean advances the mission vision and values of the college by fostering innovation providing strong leadership and demonstrating intellectual curiosity. This leader is instrumental in proactively structuring and adapting the DVM curriculum to future realities. The Associate Dean will hold a professional appointment in an appropriate academic department of the college based on the candidates background and expertise. Core responsibilities include:
In collaboration with department heads and faculty the Associate Dean is responsible for the design planning operation and assessment of the DVM education program
Plays a significant role in shaping cocurricular and communitybased activities for DVM students
Responsible for oversight and monitoring of all programs initiatives and processes which relate to the DVM program
Serves as a college liaison with university administration and oversees DVM educational activities located at affiliated locations including the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center and the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center
Responsible for overseeing the monitoring evaluation and necessary adjustments based on outcomes assessments to continuously improve quality of the DVM program ensuring alignment with accreditation standards
Establishes and maintains an organizational structure to effectively and efficiently accomplish goals and objectives
Oversees staffing in Academic Affairs Multidiscipline Laboratories and the Animal Care for Education unit
In partnership with human resources responsible for recruiting developing and retaining a talented staff whose responsibilities are to provide educational support to DVM students and faculty
In collaboration with college leadership builds relationships with key leaders within the college university and profession
Engages in strategic partnerships that further the mission and outcomes of the College
Recommends and participates in the development of university policies and procedures
Oversees annual unit budgets and performs periodic cost and effectiveness analyses
May serve on university planning and policymaking committees
Completes other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Doctoral degree (DVM PhD or equivalent) with a distinguished wellrounded record of scholarship including recognized excellence in teaching
Academic credentials consistent with rank of associate professor or higher
Working knowledge of curricular design evaluation review and requirements for accreditation
Teaching and faculty experience in a college (or school) of veterinary medicine
Experiential knowledge of innovations in veterinary medical education
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including a demonstrated ability to work with diverse team members in a collegial team atmosphere
Personal attributes conducive to success in a growthoriented fastpaced environment that requires flexibility and adaptability
Demonstrated commitment to collaboration team building active listening and timely clear and effective communication
Demonstrated commitment to empathetic leadership student mentorship and advocacy for students

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in administrative oversight of curricular design evaluation review and meeting requirements for accreditation in a professional program
Involvement in innovation of health professions education
Operational knowledge of policies and procedures common in academic affairs
Excellent time management organizational and followthrough skills
Ability to effectively manage multiple competing priorities within a rapidly evolving work environment
Proficient information technology skills to successfully navigate position responsibilities
