Job Description

TenureTrack Assistant Professor of Music Jazz Studies

The Department of Music at Loyola Marymount University invites applications for a fulltime tenuretrack faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Music in the primary area of Jazz Studies. The department seeks an active Performer/Director/ Scholar whose work engages with the diversity of American culture from varied disciplinary perspectives that includes performance and performance practice as well as areas such as cultural studies social justice music history sociology and ethnomusicology. Position Qualifications

Qualified applicants must have a completed DMA or PhD degree in Jazz Performance or Jazz Studies. ABD applicants will be considered with expectation that all degree requirements will be completed by December 15 2024. This position will begin on August 15 2025.

Preference will be given to applicants who have a strong record of university or equivalent teaching excellence in Jazz performance especially in variously sized ensembles and Jazz Studies such as the History of Jazz History of Rhythm and Blues and Fundamentals of Music. Responsibilities include: directing a Jazz ensemble; History of Jazz; seminars for firstyear students in fields related to current musical research/ practice; offering further courses reflecting the applicants particular skills or research interests. Applicants must be able to add to and complement the work of the current Music faculty in areas such as departmental administration student performance evaluation auditions/recruitment and ensemble collaboration.

The successful candidate will be expected to adopt a teacherperformerscholar model of professional engagement with a commitment to service and an established productive agenda of research and scholarship or promise of the same. We value a diverse array of professional and practical experience in addition to the required academic qualifications. Special consideration will be given to candidates whose work also shows interest and evidence in African diaspora in American culture including but not limited to Blues Gospel Rhythm & Blues Soul HipHop and the music of the Caribbean. We seek someone who is able to reveal the mechanics of these musics as well as engage with them as individual and collective expressions that carry social racial and political meanings.

The Music program at LMU offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. The music faculty consists of six fulltime tenuretrack/tenured positions two fulltime clinical positions and 20 parttime faculty. This faculty is dedicated to supporting a liberal arts curriculum and excellent undergraduate training in Music. A strong candidate will be culturally sensitive to the ideals of diversity equity and inclusion and will value the universitys mission and its commitment to the dialogue between faith and culture.
