The Outdoor Academy is an accredited residential semester school for high achieving tenthgrade and eleventhgrade students. Rising from a long tradition of experiential education at Eagles Nest Foundation a nonprofit organization chartered in 1950 The Outdoor Academy infuses a college preparatory curriculum with environmental education wilderness leadership unique arts offerings and character education in a small community setting. Established in 1995 The Outdoor Academy enrolls up to 28 students from across the United States each semester to attend our school located in Pisgah Forest North Carolina. The Outdoor Education Manager (OEM) is responsible for the oversight of all wilderness programs and staff for The Outdoor Academy (OA). The OEM works closely with the OA Director on the implementation of quality outdoor programming at OA with roles to include: risk assessment and management staff training logistics budgeting and inventory evaluation of programs and of staff new program design and implementation etc. The OEM also serves as a senior administrator and is part of the community life of OA.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Schedule and staff trips facilitate logistics lead trips and continually evolve OAs outdoor programs.
Serve as primary risk manager for OA
Train and supervise Residential/Outdoor Education Apprentices and Faculty in outdoor program capacities
Design and teach an Outdoor Education curriculum
In conjunction with the Assistant Camp Director manage shared resource equipment budgets the Gear Lending Library and permits. Manage the separate OA outdoor programs budget.
Coordinate transportation and vehicle needs of the school.
Oversee inventory maintenance and purchasing for the outdoor gear and rations rooms
Update program literature that relates to outdoor programs including the gear purchase program.
As a senior administrator attend weekly meetings and serve as an Administrator on Duty.
Additional responsibilities as a faculty manager or administrator to contribute to the life and function of the Semester community based on skills/experience of applicant and needs of the program in coordination with supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS
B.A. or B.S. in a related field or prior work experience in outdoor education
Experience with risk management in outdoor settings
Experience with staff supervision and wilderness program logistics
Wilderness First Responder required; Wilderness EMT desirable
Experience in and enthusiasm for working students in experiential education wilderness or residential settings
Welldeveloped planning and organizational skills
A clean driving record
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE
The majority of work will be conducted on campus; however offsite work in the outdoors supervising teenagers will occur several times each semester. The ability to work long days in hot and/or cold environments and lift heavy gear and boxes is required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed to fulfill program demands.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary (Contract AugustJuly) contributory health insurance plan retirement plans paid time off Camp and OA discounts for dependent children meals prodeals on gear and outdoor leadership training. Specific benefits are outlined in the employment contract. Oncampus housing is also possible.
