Job Description

Schenectady ARC has been providing services to developmentally disabled adults since 1952 and is committed to helping people within the Capital Region enjoy healthy rewarding lives as members of their community. Position: Behavior Intervention Specialist 1 or II

Compensation Range: $22.30 $31.87

Hours: Full time Monday Friday 35 hours/week)

The Behavior Intervention Specialist is responsible for the assessment diagnosis and treatment of behaviors that interfere with the intellectual social and emotional development and functioning of persons served. The responsibilities and duties of the Behavior Intervention Specialist include but are not limited to:

* Conduct behavioral assessments under the supervision of a New York State licensed psychologist

* Serve as a team member in the regular review of an individuals functioning and guide the team in planning and implementation of appropriate psychological services

* Design modify and implement behavior support plans in conjunction with the treatment team BSP development/implementation is conducted under the supervision of a New York State licensed psychologist (Special Note: A Level 1 qualified BIS can supervise a Level 2 qualified BIS in the development and implementation of Behavior Support plans that do not have any intrusive or restriction interventions)

* Design modify and implement medication monitoring plans in conjunction with the treatment team.

* Provide a range of psychological services to individuals and groups for the purposes of addressing psychological/emotional needs for the participants (i.e. individual and group counseling)

* Consult with families and residential providers on an as needed basis relative to psychological services and behavioral interventions

* Serve as a resource to staff both formally through the development of inservice training and consultation informally through routine contacts with staff

* Engage in ongoing communication with service providers treatment providers and other relevant team members regarding coordination of services

* Administer appropriate psychological tests necessary to assess individuals functioning level in relevant areas (e.g. dementia assessment adaptive behavior assessment) or for the purposes of behavioral assessment. Psychological testing is conducted under the supervision of a New York State licensed psychologist

* Provide accurate relevant data for review by the psychiatrist for shared cases

* Serve as a resource to all staff and consumers on a formal and informal basis

Minimum Qualifications:

Level I Behavior Intervention Specialist:

  1. At least a Masters degree from a program in a clinical or treatment field of psychology social work school psychology or applied psychology as it relates to human development and clinical interventions and documented training in assessment techniques and behavior support plan development; or A National Board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) and a Masters degree in behavior analysis; or a National Board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) and a Masters degree in a field closely related to clinical or community psychology that is approved by OPWDD; or a New York State License in mental health counseling (LMHC)
  • Five 5 years experience working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities including the development implementation and monitoring of behavior support plans; orfive 5 years experience providing supervision and training to others in the implementation of behavior support plans

Level II Behavior Intervention Specialist:

Option A:

  1. A National Board certification in behavior analysis BCBA and a Masters degree in behavior analysis or a field closely related to clinical or community psychology that is approved by OPWDD;or

Option B:

  1. A Masters degree in a clinical or treatment field of psychology social work school psychology as it relates to human development or clinical intervention or a related human service field;or
  2. A New York State license in mental health counseling (LMHC);andhave or obtain OPWDDapproved specialized training or experience in functional assessment techniques and behavior support plan development; or

Option C:

  1. A Bachelors degree in a human service field;and
  2. Have provided behavioral services for an agency in the OPWDD system as of and continuously since December 31 2012;and
  3. Is actively working toward a Masters degree in an applied area of psychology social work or special education;or
  4. Completing at least one graduate level course in an applied health service area of applied psychology social work or special education each year

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

  • NYS drivers license that meets agency guidelines
  • Reliable Transportation
  • Basic computer skills
