The Communications & Security Specialist 1 will provide communications services within the Police Department at SUNY Upstate. The primary responsibility is to function as the initial point of contact between the police and the public performing dispatching activities and using various databases online systems and multiple video sources.
Duties include but are not limited to: maintain status and control over all mobile radio units in service; reports emergency situations to supervisory personnel; operate radio receiver and broadcast equipment telephone equipment the New York Statewide Police Information Network (NYSPIN) terminal equipment personal computers closed circuit television systems and electronic security systems. Monitors and controls electronic access system retrieves and reviews messages prepares written reports; operates logging devices. Maintains communications files and performs other communicationrelated duties as required by the shift supervisor. May perform security guard duties to support campus police operations.
Must possess and maintain a valid NYS drivers license.

You must be a qualified employee of the State University of New York and have had one year of permanent competitive noncompetitive NY HELPS* or 55b/55c service as a Security Services Assistant 1 Security Services Assistant 2 or Security Officer.
Open competitive (Noncompetitive NY HELPS) Qualifications
Either 1.one year of full time experience as a Police or Peace Officer;
Or 2.one year of full time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments emergency medical services or law enforcement;
Or 3.one year of active service and an Honorable Discharge from the United States military where you served as a dispatcher or military police/security personnel;
Or 4.30 semester college credit hours from an accredited school (college must be recognized by the NYS Education Dept).
Examples of NonQualifying Experience: Taxi limousine or bus service dispatcher; automotive service dispatcher; trucking dispatcher; or maintenance dispatcher.
Rotating Shifts
NY HELPs appointments may be temporary pending commissioner approval or permanent noncompetitive based on candidate eligibility.
