Job Description
The Team
The Port Alberni Crown Counsel team is a closeknit group of dedicated professionals including Management Professional Support Staff and Crown Counsel. They work together to ensure justice is served fairly and effectively making a meaningful impact on the community and supporting victims of crime. This established team collaborates with a diverse group of legal experts who are passionate about protecting society.
The Role
As Crown Counsel you will lead the prosecution of offences under the Criminal Code provincial laws and certain federal statutes from start to finish. Youll make important decisions about which charges to pursue and guide cases through the court process all in line with BC Prosecution Service policies and the Crown Counsel Act. In this role youll have the opportunity to support witnesses victims and their families with care and respect ensuring they feel prepared and informed throughout the court proceedings. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or immediate eligibility for call to the British Columbia Bar.
- Crown Counsel Level 1: Counsel up to 5th year of call with a minimum of six 6 months of recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada including in the area of criminal law.
- Crown Counsel Level 2: Counsel in their 6th to 11th year of call with a minimum of two 2 years of recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada including in the area of criminal law.
- Crown Counsel Level 3: Counsel in their 12th year of call or greater with a minimum of two 2 years of recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada including in the area of criminal law.
- Significant trial experience.
- Experience prosecuting Criminal Code of Canada offences or federal statutes prosecuted by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
Preference may be given to applicants with/who are:
- Currently employed as Crown Counsel by the BC Prosecution Service.
- Currently employed as Crown Counsel by the BC Prosecution Service the Public Prosecution Service of Canada or another provincial prosecution service.
- Currently employed as Crown Counsel by the BC Prosecution Service with 2 or more years of experience employed as Crown Counsel by the BC Prosecution Service.
- Two 2 or more years of experience employed as Crown Counsel by the BC Prosecution Service the Public Prosecution Service of Canada or another provincial prosecution service.

This position is included in the Crown Counsel Association. Under thePublic Service Labour Relations Actthis position is excluded from union membership. Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
This is a temporary opportunity until January 2nd 2026. This position may be extended.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Review Act Check (CRRA) and Enhanced Security Screening will be required.
