Summary
To provide quality library and information services professional reference and readers advisory services to library users. Responsible for helping to analyze the publics library needs and advising the public in their use of library resources at the Central Library or at a branch library. Also responsible for planning coordinating and implementing library services and programs for adults ages 18 and older.
Pay Range: $23.75 30.85 (Depending on qualifications and experience)
Weekly Schedule: Includes nights and weekends with some changes to the regular schedule required to participate in programming and outreach services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Guide and assist patrons in locating answers to their questions using a variety of available resources; perform reference interviews and readers advisory services.
Instruct and advise patrons in using the online catalog system and databases understanding classification systems and reference material procedures finding materials and evaluating Internet and other available resources.
Resolve patron problems and modify library services consistent with established library policy.
Perform basic computer hardware and software troubleshooting.
Conduct instructional classes on technology the Internet and the librarys online resources.
Assess patron needs; plan develop and present programs of popular interest to the public; evaluate programming and activities.
Maintain data conduct periodic surveys and compile narrative and statistical reports on activities and functions within the library.
Participate in daytoday library operations including but not limited to opening and closing routines and banking/cash handling procedures.
Participate as needed in the evaluation selection acquisition retention discarding or special handling of library materials.
Stay apprised of new resources through continuing education professional journals and training.
Contribute to a positive work environment take pride in the workplace and have knowledge sensitivity and awareness of diverse cultures.
Minimum Qualifications
Masters Degree in Library Science from anAmerican Library Association accredited college or university or within 6 months of earning an MLS from an American Library Association accredited college or university.
Up to 1year related experience
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/ Experience:
Advanced graduate level coursework in library technology and electronic resources
1 or more years of professional public library experience.
Training or experience in working with mainstream social media (i.e. Facebook Twitter or feed readers)
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Demonstrated ability to communicate within all levels of an organization matched with strong verbal written presentation and oneonone communication skills
Strong service orientation with a positive attitude
Ability to work independently be flexible and thrive in a fastpaced work environment
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Listens effectively and communicates in concise tactful respectful manner both orally and in writing including proper use of sentence construction punctuation and grammar
Advanced knowledge of business practices and procedures
Comprehensive knowledge of current practices in public libraries including reference services readers advisory and library technology
Comprehensive knowledge of electronic resources
Excellent written and oral communications skills
Skill in utilizing a variety of Internet browsers search engines Internet based productivity tools and email
Skill in creating content using social media tools (i.e. Flickr YouTube etc.
Ability to work cooperatively and congenially with others
Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to handle customer issues and complaints appropriately
Ability to work closely with others as part of a team
Ability to work a varying 19 hourperweek schedule
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Class C Texas drivers license
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
The incumbent works in a typical office environment; but some physical labor exposure to dust and travel to various sites may occur. Physical tasks will include lifting reaching pushing squatting bending stooping walking and carrying supplies as needed to accomplish the tasks of the activity on a daily basis. Primary environment will be in a climate controlled indoor atmosphere. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
