Job Description

General Summary

Support the Department of Public Works in their mission to provide professional public works services to manage natural and built systems and foster community health safety and sustainability. This position is in the Facilities Maintenance Division and may be assigned to either a HVAC or Electrical Crew.

This position may be filled as a Building Maintenance Mechanic II or as a Building Maintenance Mechanic III depending on qualifications.

The preferred hiring range for a Building Maintenance Mechanic II or III is between$19.00 $24.00 Hourly$39520.00 $49920.00 Annually). As of March 28 2024 this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the CitysCollective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22128. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement which will take effect on July 1 2025.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties



Building Maintenance Mechanic III Typical tasks include:
  • Inspecting mechanical equipment and facilities to find the source of a problem and making required corrections and tests for satisfactory and safe operation;
  • Inspecting building systems such as HVAC and electrical equipment;
  • Installing maintaining and making general repairs to mechanical equipment on an emergency or scheduled basis;
  • Installing and maintaining electronic control systems;
  • Participating in approved training programs to develop skill sets for advancement to higher or improved levels of competency;
  • Maintaining records of work performed; and
  • Performing related tasks as required.
Position requires comprehensive knowledge of methods materials equipment and tools of mechanical repairs and pertinent safety requirements; general knowledge of mechanical and electromechanical systems usually found in office buildings and schools; general knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment operation and general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with equipment maintenance work. Also requires demonstrated ability to: perform general field and shop repairs on mechanical equipment; follow written and oral instructions; and ability to read and work from engineered plans and specifications.

Position may require employees to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekends. This position is subject to supporting weather and/or other emergency events and performing standby or oncall.
