Assistant Professor in Marine Geophysics

Hiring Unit: Department of Earth Sciences SOEST

Location: Manoa Campus

Other Conditions: Salary funds are provided for a ninemonth appointment. Anticipated start date is August 1 2025. Subject to position clearance.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. To conduct assigned courses or seminars.
  2. To supervise independent study activities and offcampus learning such as practicums and internships.
  3. To serve as academic advisor to students.
  4. To serve on department college and university committees.
  5. To render service to the professional or lay community that is relevant to the individuals academic specialty.
  6. To participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods.
  7. To participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees.
  8. To conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity.
  9. To perform related tasks as assigned.
  10. Establish an externally funded and internationally recognized research program.
  11. Present research discoveries in written and oral formats including peerreviewed journals and national/international symposia.
  12. Demonstrate a commitment to faculty performance that aligns with the goals of Manoa 2025 ( which include becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning enhancing student success achieving excellence in research and building a sustainable and resilient campus environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. A doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position.
  2. Expertise in marine geophysics research including but not limited to active or passive seismology or electromagnetism seafloor geodesy or seafloor cables/ DAS.
  3. Demonstrated ability as a teacher.
  4. Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
  5. Demonstrated excellence in professional written and oral communication. Examples include but are not limited to publications in peerreviewed scientific journals technical reports publicfocused communications and presentations at professional meetings.
  6. Ability to establish an extramural funded research program.
  7. Ability to foster participation of underrepresented groups work with people of varied perspectives and experiences and support Indigenous approaches values and knowledge with respect and cultural sensitivity.
  8. Qualities (ability to work collaboratively proactively reliably) and motivation for promoting a positive and supportive work environment among students staff and faculty.
  9. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications
  1. Ability to develop a cuttingedge research program in marine geophysics that addresses questions including but not limited to active plate margins (e.g. subduction zones midocean ridges oceanic transforms) marine geohazards evolution of ocean volcanic islands or processes regulating plate tectonics.
  2. Record of extramural research funding or leadership in major research programs in marine geophysics.
  3. Record of or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring including creative approaches for enhancing student learning.
  4. Record of nationally or internationally recognized research accomplishments.
  5. Potential for academic and scientific leadership including making transformative advances in the field.
  6. Interest in scientific endeavors relevant to Hawaii and the Pacific region.
  7. Interest in developing a global seagoing research program in marine geophysics.
  8. Research skills and interests that complement and enhance the research activities in the Department of Earth Sciences other units at the University of Hawaii and State and Federal agencies within Hawaii such as the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The Department of Earth Sciences ( is one of thirteen research units and four academic departments within the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) ( a worldclass research and academic institution focused on informing solutions to some of the worlds most vexing problems.
