The Genetic Counselor works in consultation with the physicians and other genetic counselors in the Genetics Program and with referring physicians to plan develop and implement clinical practice and research in the area of clinical human genetics under the direction of the chief of genetics. In addition will work with other departments as the need for genetic counseling expands. The Genetic Counselors primary responsibility is providing counseling to patients and families in the area of clinical human genetics. Conducts literature searches and extracts information from literature reviews to assist in developing a diagnostic plan or workup. Analyzes and interprets information obtained from the patient medical records and currently available resource information. This involves the assessment of patient pedigrees a review of medical physical and psychological status dysmorphology assessments interpreting genetic laboratory and other diagnostic tests. Serves as a resource of information for referring physicians. Provides comprehensive teaching of patients or families regarding the etiology inheritance incidence/carrier risks genetic testing test results and their implications for the individual and family members. Provides crisis and grief counseling when needed and makes appropriate referrals. Participates in developing and implementing educational programs for the public community physicians as well as interdisciplinary staff at University Hospital. The Genetic Counselor has a role in case management and assists in making referrals to subspecialists community services resources and identifying financial coverage and authorization of services based upon individual patient needs. Interventions involve a disciplined application of professional knowledge related to genetic technologies theories and resources for a broad range of problems. This position provides genetic counseling at a specialized level of practice.
Masters Degree conferred by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) required.
Two years of Genetic Counseling experience Board Certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) preferred. Experience in pediatricrelated genetic disease processes and working with patients and family members preferred. However new graduates are encouraged to apply. *Salary/title level commensurate with qualifications.
