Responsibilities
Health Research Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist I to work within the Birth Defects Research Section in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology Center for Environmental Health New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). The NYSDOH has been a CDCfunded Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (CBDRP) since 1996. As such scientists with the NY CBDRP take part in research and surveillance activities to understand more about what causes birth defects and stillbirths through the Birth Defects Study to Evaluate Pregnancy exposureS (BDSTEPS) and its precursor the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS). The incumbent will join a team of public health professionals to work on collaborative casecontrol studies on birth defects funded by CDC including the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) and the Birth Defects Study To Evaluation Pregnancy exposureS (BDSTEPS). The incumbent will perform literature searches related to birth defects and stillbirth; collect organize handle and evaluate projectrelated data; participate in problem definition planning and of birth defects and stillbirth surveillance and research; and analyze data and interpret results including contributing to the development of SAS programs data cleaning and data analysis; prepare reports presentations posters tables charts and graphs; and contribute to drafting manuscripts for publication in scientific journals based on analyses.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Epidemiology Biostatistics Public/Environmental Health or a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Masters degree in a related field and one year of research experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduate degree in Biostatistics or Epidemiology and one year experience conducting epidemiological research and data management/data analysis. Experience with statistical analysis using SAS. Experience analyzing birth defects or stillbirth data. Familiarity with Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) birth defects surveillance data or vital records data. Experience devising algorithms to match to large administrative data sets. Experience writing manuscripts based on analyses.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting grant deliverables and contract deliverables is required.
Travel up to 10 of the time will be required.
The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York New Jersey Connecticut Vermont or Massachusetts prior to hire. Telecommuting will be available.
