The Opportunity
WSDOT is seekingto fill a Maintenance Supervisor vacancy in ProsserWA. Under the direction of the Maintenance Superintendent this position will plan budget schedule and supervise the work of the highway maintenance crews who perform a variety of highway and right of way maintenance work in Pasco Prosser and Connell sections of South Central Region Area 3. The Highway Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for their safety and the safety of other crew members while performing winter and routine maintenance operations. By accomplishing assigned tasks the person in this position will contribute to the ability of the traveling public to travel safely and efficiently over state highways. Our top candidate will have a safety mindset and exceptional leadership skills.
What to Expect
This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors often next to highvolume highspeed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday 40hours per week for 4 10hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to nonscheduled or callout emergencies. Occasional callout/callback for overtime required.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role theHighway Maintenance Supervisor will:
- Supervise highway maintenance workers in the daily performance of all assigned maintenance tasks within the assigned sections.
- Inspect and patrol 400 lane miles of roadway including all rightofway bridges structures and buildings.
- Prepare monthly schedule and determine work priorities for maintenance crews to include participation in the Active Resource Management (ARM).
- Supervise all maintenance activities on roadway roadside and formal landscaped areas including but not limited to building/shoulder maintenance asphalt patching operations culvert and cross drain maintenance irrigation and domestic water systems pesticide application and snow and ice control.
- Respond to emergency callouts within a reasonable timeframe.
- Prepare monthly schedules conduct monthly safety meetings and annual employee performance evaluations.
- Prepare specification and solicit verbal and written bids for rental of equipment and purchase of supplies chemicals tools and services and order supplies from Region Stores.
- Operate miscellaneous power and nonpower tools.
- Operate 26000 to 54000 GVW dump trucks and other heavy equipment.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
- One 1 year of experience in a maintenance lead role leading and supervising a crew.
- A CDL Class A with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
- A valid medical card.
- A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card or the ability to obtain within 12 months of appointment.
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment used for road maintenance.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities.
- Knowledge of road and winter conditions how to research them and ability to make decisions that keep the public safe.
- A First Aid certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of appointment.
- A Washington State Pesticide Applicators License or the ability to obtain within 12 months of appointment.
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing to a variety of audiences
- Basic computer iPad and smartphone knowledge.
- The ability to transport move and manipulate various types of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- The ability to respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
- The ability to traverse varied surface conditions perform working duties on uneven terrain and climb in and out of equipment.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school diploma or a GED certificate.
- Two 2 years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 or equivalent.
- The ability to supervise others operating snow and ice removal equipment in adverse weather conditions during day and night hours and to assist with the management of the snow and ice program.
- The ability to interact with the public and fellow employees in a professional manner daily.

- Travel is required within the maintenance area to conduct work activities or attend meetings and trainings. Occasional travel outside the area for trainings conferences or meetings is also required.
