Summary/objective: The Senior Accountant is responsible for a range of accounting functions including all billing for the Archdiocese of Detroit bank and account reconciliations and the preparation and posting of journal entries for all funds. The Senior Accountant will also manage the accounting for fundraising campaigns and engage in financial system report writing and variance analysis.
Duties and Responsibilities Prepare and post journal entries for all funds Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for approximately 30 bank accounts Prepare monthly general ledger account reconciliation Perform accounting functions for accounts receivable and fundraising campaigns: Calculate and generate all monthly invoices and statements Reconcile all receivables ensuring they are properly recorded cash payments are properly posted and making appropriate adjustments as needed Prepare and post all accrual journal entries Interface with parishes and other Archdiocesan related organizations and departments regarding billing questions and handling of related billing issues Accounting for fundraising campaigns Calculate and record accounting transactions in accordance with campaign specific guidelines (i.e. parish reimbursements debt reductions and donor designations) Reconcile fundraising campaign details to subledger Analyze reserve for doubtful accounts Prepare for mailing monthly investment statements to parishes Archdiocesan entities/departments and other related organizations Assist in the design and coding of accounting system generated financial/management reports Member of the Accounting team involved in the continuous analyzation and development of appropriate solutions through enhanced utilization of the accounting software solution Actual vs. budget variance analysis on a monthly basis Perform other related duties as assigned Qualifications Strong computer skills in using MS Office and Financial/Accounting software packages Good verbal and written communication skills required Strong analytical and problemsolving skills A desire to learn and broaden accounting system knowledge Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality handling highly sensitive material Physical Demands: Position requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. May involve some lifting carrying pushing/or pulling of objects and materials 550 pounds). May involve extended periods of time standing or sitting at a keyboard or workstation. May involve repetitive motion (i.e. typing). May involve walking long distances.
Travel Required: Travel throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Education and Experience Requirements: A bachelors degree in accounting with at least five years of workrelated accounting experience; nonprofit/fund accounting experience a plus
