Title: Per Diem Sleep Technician Pediatrics Sleep Study Lab MSH 6PM 7:30AM
The Sleep Technician performs all types of sleep disorder testing including setup and performance of nocturnal polysomnograms (PSGs) on all age groups. Must demonstrate working knowledge of polysomnography Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT) oximetry and administration of supplemental O2 Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP and/or BPAP) studies and the basics of Sleep Medicine and recognizes cardiac arrhythmia. Demonstrates organizational computer interpersonal and technical skills to complete quality studies in a timely and accurate manner.
Roles & Responsibilities:
1. Gathers and Analyzes Patient Information
a. Reviews history physical information medications procedure request and study protocol. Communicates with the Medical Director as necessary.
b. Checks voice mail upon arrival to the lab.
c. Completes and verifies documentation.
d. Assists in explaining the procedure and orienting the patient to the sleep center.
e. Attempts to locate noshows and to fill unexpected openings using StandBy Waiting List. Checks with Lab Supervisor and/or Medical Director if fewer than usual patients on the list.
2. Testing Preparation Procedures
a. Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary.
b. Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards and protocol.
c. Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary
3. Polysomnographic Procedures
a. Follows procedural protocols for diagnostic polysomnography (NPSG) Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) PAP and oxygen titration etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data.
b. Follows lights out procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position oxyhemoglobin saturation respiratory and heart rates etc.
c. Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring studytracing quality to ensure signals are artifactfree and make adjustments if necessary.
d. Documents routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events changes in procedure and other significant events in order to facilitates coring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
e. Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bilevel positive airway pressure oxygen administration etc..
f. Follows lights on procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires etc.
g. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment assessment and education of adolescent adult and geriatric patients.
h. Recognizes sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
i. Recognizes clinical events (such as respiratory events cardiac events limb movements arousals etc. as per professionally accepted guidelines.
4. Service Management and Professional Issues
a. Complies with applicable laws regulations guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues and Rules of Ethics and Conduct Guidelines.
b. Performs routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.
c. Maintains current CPR /BCLS certification.
d. Demonstrates effective written and spoken communication skills.
e. Demonstrates appropriate social skills.
f. Demonstrates ability to follow direction
g. Responds to study participants proceduralrelated inquiries by providing appropriate information
Requirements:
Education Requirements
High school graduate/GED with at least 6 months of experience as a polysomnographic technician OR successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility.
Experience Requirements
None if successfully completed a polysomnographic technician program otherwise a minimum of 6 months experience.
