About Us

Aiven is building a highly scalable and resilient infrastructure platform to power our products and services. Our Infrastructure Platform team is responsible for developing and maintaining the core systems that enable our engineering teams to deliver highquality software efficiently and reliably.

The Role

Were hiring a engineering manager to lead our Infrastructure Platforms product engineering team. The Infrastructure Platform enables our users to explore and control their containerized applications and data services through our highavailable APIs. The Infrastructure Platform is often the customers first touchpoint with Aivens data platform and plays a big part in our productled growth strategy. We want it to be an intuitive and seamless experience while providing advanced features to support experienced users needs.

The team works on all aspects of the Infrastructure Platform across our whole tech stack but is specifically focused on bringing new product features to life in close collaboration with other teams while also keeping the technical foundation and delivery of the Infrastructure Platform in tiptop shape. The distributed team consists of fantastic engineers concentrated around our Production Engineering hub in Toronto.

We are looking for a productionminded engineering manager who has a keen interest in the business and user behavior is proactive with planning priorisation and tradeoffs and wants to understand the Why behind all things. As a productionminded engineering manager you communicate well with engineers and nonengineers alike and are interested in how other functions work.

What Youll Do:

  • Plan the engineering roadmap together with product management and the team
  • Manage the teams backlog.
  • Be accountable for the teams output and performance
  • Coach team members as they advance in their careers
  • Grow the team by hiring excellent engineering talent
  • Foster a psychologically safe hightrust environment where curiosity healthy debate and exchange of ideas thrive
  • Facilitate team meetings like planning and retrospectives.

What Were Looking For:

Our engineering managers have a handson programming background and we expect them to have a meaningful say in technical conversations. Youll probably have at least five years handson programming experience building maintaining and operating distributed systems and at least two years experience of people management. But more than the years we care about what you have been doing. We want to hear about the products you shipped how they were built what was the impact and what you learned while doing that.

The team interacts with a wide range of products and technologies but infrastructure and distributed systems is at its core. Our primary technologies are Python and Go services backed by PostgreSQL. We dont expect you to tackle everything on the list from the getgo but having prior experience is beneficial for sure.

Leadership Skills

  • Proven track record of leading teams in successful software product deliveries
  • Communicate crossfunctionally and have a strong product sense
  • Experience in recruiting engineering talent
  • Experience in agile software development
  • Comfortable leading initiatives and presenting to groups
  • Fluent communication skills in English written and verbal

Technical Skills

  • Experience building fullstack web applications endtoend including modern singlepage apps
  • Experience preferably handson in public cloud infrastructure and networking (AWS GCP and/or Azure)
  • Experience designing public RESTful APIs
  • Relational database knowledge (PostgreSQL MySQL etc.
  • Streaming service knowledge (Kafka etc.
  • Experience working with CI/CD tools (BuildKite GitLab CI/CD GitHub Actions etc.
