About the Team

The Sensors Division at STR focuses on applied research and advanced technology development to bring innovative sensor system technology to the warfighter. STR develops innovative capabilities across technologies spanning underwater acoustics and EO/IR to radar and electronic warfare. Our work bridges the modeling development integration and test and evaluation required to prove the capability at each step.

The Advanced Systems Development (ASD) Group within the Sensors Division supports the DoD and IC. ASD executes a broad portfolio of undersea and overhead acoustic and optical technologies focused on advancing sensing capabilities in contested areas. The team addresses all the elements of building and demonstrating sensing systems from signature exploitations and advanced algorithms to building and testing physical sensors with embedded software.

The Role

ASD is seeking a Software Engineer with experience in Embedded Systems Software Design to support advancing algorithms and developmental code to a final system implementation. These efforts will involve either working with payloads with finite compute resources or supporting design choices between resources and algorithm performance.

You will collaborate with fellow researchers and engineers on multidisciplinary teams within STR to develop build test and demonstrate novel systems operating in challenging environments.

What you will do:

• Work with a small focused team to develop implement and test realtime applications on a range of processor architectures
• Implement realtime systems from verified algorithms written in developmental languages
• Support software upgrades and maintenance of prototype systems undergoing extended demonstration evaluations in laboratory and/or fielded environments
• Apply best practices for development and testing of software in a process that allows for continuous evolution of functionality

Who you are:

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance for which U.S. citizenship is needed by the U.S. Government
• BS or MS in Computer Science Computer Engineering Applied Mathematics or related fields
• 35 years work experience depending on degree 5 years for BS and 3 years for MS)
• Demonstrated experience in embedded system development and firmware implementation 3 years)
• High proficiency in C or C
• Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB Python or similar
• Knowledge of and experience with low level communication peripherals such as SPI UART I2C USB Ethernet etc
• Demonstrated ability to relate and optimize designs to requirements and performance metrics such as latency throughput accuracy
• Experience debugging realtime/embedded C/C code on microcontrollers
• Ability to support lab and field testing of designed system
• Understanding of softwarehardware interfacing techniques and implementation
• Skills in debugging testing and documenting software applications
• Strong critical thinking and problem skills

Even Better:

• Breadth of experience involving implementations in inaccessible or limitedaccess environments such as undersea and/or space
• Experience developing software with embedded operating systems and multithreaded RTOS
• Knowledge and/or experience with lab equipment such as multimeters function generators oscilloscopes etc
• Experience in simulation and experiment design data collection and analysis
• Experience with high levelsoftware architecture design
• Interest and demonstrated aptitude for working on large complex technical projects and teams
