You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThe MaxBornInstitute invites applications for a PhD student (m/f/d) in the field of Ultrafast magnetization dynamics probed by lasergenerated extreme ultraviolet radiation
Job profile:
Ultrashort laser pulses can deterministically reverse the magnetisation of thin magnetic films without the need for any external magnetic fields. This fascinating observation is not only of great interest for data storage applications where in the future individual bits may be switched with light pulses rather than with magnetic fields as employed today. It is also one of the most intriguing phenomena in current solidstate research; the underlying microscopic processes are only partially understood and discussed controversially. The goal of the offered PhD position is to experimentally explore the fundamental mechanisms on their intrinsic ultrafast time and nanometre spatial scale.
Over the last years we have set up unique experiments based on high harmonic generation to directly access the elementselective magnetic response of thin film systems. Via high harmonic generation intense ultrashort laser pulses generate soft xray radiation enabling ultrafast corelevel spectroscopy on magnetic atoms such as Mn Fe Co and Ni. Building on this experience we are currently setting up a stateofthe art laboratory equipped by a highpower laser system with sub10 femtosecond pulse duration. You will be part of our team to commission this new experiment and to perform ultrafast spectroscopy on functional multielement magnetic systems.
The project will be realized in a stimulating environment regarding the available experience and possibilities for national and international collaborations. Theoretical support by abinitio electronic structure calculations is available in house. You will be part of a welcoming and experienced team at MBI and part of the Graduate School of the Collaborative Research Center Ultrafast Spin Dynamics www.trr227 offering unique opportunities.
Requirements:
We are looking for a student with a Master of Science or Diploma degree in Physics with above average grades. We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates who enjoy working in a team environment and have handson experience in optical laboratory work. Experience with ultrashort laser pulses soft xrays vacuum technology and data analysis software (e.g. Matlab Phyton) is beneficial.
Offer:
The researcher position is available at the earliest possible date and fully funded for a 3year PhD program. The payment is according to the German TVD salary scheme for scientists in public research institutions 75.
