Job Description

The Department of Corrections Division of Institutions is recruiting for an Education Coordinator position at the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center (YKCC) located in Bethel Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:
As an Education Coordinator with Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center you will be responsible for:
  • Program developing including designing programs and developing curriculum for inmate education in the areas of Adult Basic Education; General Equivalency Diploma (GED); Life Skills; Vocational Education; and PostSecondary Education
  • Determining the appropriateness of programs to a correctional facility educational needs interests and skills of the prisoners.
  • Providing testing to determine academic and/or vocational aptitude interest and placement.
  • Providing prisoner academic and vocational counseling including information on pursuing postsecondary or other educational goals upon release.
  • Supervising and managing computerbased education and training systems evaluating student progress and attendance and providing documentation of student progress for facility files as well as reports for the Department of Education or other regulatory agencies.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:
The position requires working in the secure side of the correctional center and interacting with both male & female inmates both sentenced and unsentenced of all custody levels. You will be provided an office within the educational space and will perform direct instruction in classrooms and oversee educational activities in the computer lab.

  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example technical sensitive controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others attends to nonverbal cues and responds appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree from an accredited college in education counseling social or behavior sciences or a closely related field;
AND
One year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services. This experience is equivalent to work such as the Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant 2 or Education Program Assistant and similar classes with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Additional qualifying work experience may substitute for the education on a yearforyear basis.

Special Note:
An extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants.

Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk. Some positions perform activities that require bending crouching walking or standing for long periods of time. Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels vibration dust dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.

EDUCATION

If postsecondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications you must fill in the Education section of the application. If you have not obtained a degree please indicate the number of units completed. Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position. Transcripts can be attached at the time of application or provided at the time of interview at the discretion of the hiring manager.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FOREIGN EDUCATION

Education completed in foreign colleges universities or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. postsecondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the postsecondary institution or high school. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
