Job Description

Prevention Specialist

Since 1884 Madison has been saving and enhancing the lives of youth by providing youth development services for children in New York Citys most disadvantaged communities. Our programs are engineered to empower each member to achieve three priority outcomes: Academic Success Good Character & Citizenship and the adoption of a Healthy Lifestyle. Every day Madison provides thousands of children with a safe and positive environment one where fun is encouraged and positive role models are plentiful. A founding member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America Madison currently serves more than 5000 youth ages 6 to 18 at five sites throughout Brooklyn Bronx and Harlem. We are offering an exciting opportunity for an Prevention Specialist at our following clubhouse:

  • Navy Yard Clubhouse New York NY

This is a fulltime position working 35 hours a week Monday through Friday in the afternoon and evening.

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning organizing conducting evaluating and facilitating departmental programs activities and events under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director and providing individual guidance and referrals as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan implement and facilitate workshops utilizing prescribed evidencebased programs to empower youth to avoid tobacco alcohol and proper decision making and the importance of lifelong healthy decisionmaking and behaviors.
  • Work effectively to prepare members to be leaders upstanding citizens and community role models.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with agencies and communitybased programs in order to make the proper referrals for the intervention of drug and developmental problems of members.
  • Guide program participants individually and in group settings to achieve personal adjustments in regards to social school or family situations.
  • Initiate and maintain community contacts with families schools and other organizations and institutions to enhance programs and services.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Bachelors Degree from stateaccredited university/college and a minimum of 2 years in a related field required.
  • CASAC or CASACT strongly preferred but not required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young people from diverse backgrounds ages 618 as well as a range of other organizational personnel in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to empower youth with effective programming and leadership training in small group settings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Proven track record of engaging youth in a responsible and mature manner.
