Summary of Position: The Student Life Assistant is responsible to support the student life coordination for the Air Force JROTC Flight Academic initiative. The position will support the Student Life Director with the supervision transportation and logistical support for Air Force JROTC cadets mostly rising high school seniors and newly graduated high school students who will reside on the Marion IN campus and complete flight training at the Marion Municipal Airport starting on Saturday May 31st.
The individual must be available parttime (up to 29 hours per week) throughout the duration of the Flight Academy (May 28 July 26 2025. Additionally the individual must be available for training 23 hours maximum) prior to the Flight Academy. It is expected that flight training and residential activities will operate six 6 days per week with Sundays and major holidays off. The Student Life Assistant position will load balance the schedule with the Student Life Director. The individual may not be enrolled in summer classes or have other employment that would impede their ability to work Monday to Saturday.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitoring student life and safety
- Assess minimal preparedness (e.g. sufficient sleep health and wellness engagement in activities and overall performance) of cadets and inform the flight school and university leadership of any concerns
- Provide proper supervision of cadets during the duration of their stay as directed by program leadership
- Transportation
- Support the transportation of cadets between the Indianapolis airport at the start and end of the Flight Academy between the Marion Campus and Marion Airport throughout the Flight Academy and between the Marion Campus and local establishments as necessary for personal needs and community activities
- Maintain the cleanliness and safe operating condition of the vehicle as stipulated by the universitys transportation policy
- Administrative
- Support checkin and checkout procedures for residence halls
- Support the structured setting for cadets with established schedules for meals physical fitness (as requested) flight instruction and supplemental activities
- Create community in the residence halls
- Facilitate and participate in supplemental activities
- In coordination with conference services support meal coordination between the Marion Campus and the Marion Airport
- Assist with cadet medical or other emergency communication
Qualifications:According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement. |
Education - A rising college junior or senior OR recent graduate (minimum 2.5 GPA)
Experience - Previous experience in higher education student development or working with high school youth required
- Preference given to applicants with tutoring teaching and/or camp counseling experience
- Experience as an aviator is a plus
Required Skills - Demonstrated ability to develop positive relationships with students and manage conflict resolution
- Skilled in mentoring or counseling youth
- Ability to communicate in all forms (e.g. verbal and written) and modicums (e.g. electronic inperson or otherwise)
- Ability and legal authorization to drive a university passenger van and transport cadets and other university personnel safely between locations
