General Summary:

The Licensed Practical Nurse I works as a team member with other ancillary personnel under the direction of the registered professional nurse to meet technical care needs for a specified population of patients.

These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner in accordance with the mission values and behaviors of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care service and kindness toward all patients staff physicians volunteers and guests.



Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of and in partnership with the registered professional nurse performs all of the following activities as directed based on the individual needs of the patient.
A. Collects clinical data reporting any unusual results to the registered professional nurse.
  1. TPR BP Pain Scale
  2. Intake and Output
  3. Blood glucose levels
  4. Height and weight
  5. Post procedure evaluation
  6. Performs 12 Lead EKGs as directed in CCU ER and Telemetry units
  7. Documents findings in appropriate areas of chart including shift and 24hour intake and output totals as needed
B. Performs assigned therapeutic tasks
  1. Lifting positioning deep breathing ambulating patients
  2. Dressing changes utilizing aseptic/sterile technique as appropriate
  3. Feeds or assists patients with meals
  4. Provides enteral feedings and manages feeding equipment
  5. Reinforces specific Occupational Therapy exercises as directed
  6. Reinforces specific Physical Therapy exercises as directed
  7. Reinforces specific patient education information as directed
  8. Assists with application of restraints as directed
  9. Oral nasal and tracheal suctioning
  10. Foley catheter ostomy and decubitus care
  11. Specific pulmonary therapies and application of O2 appliances
C. Collects specimens as assigned
  1. Performs phlebotomy for blood specimen collection
  2. Collects urine stool and sputum specimens as directed
  3. Draws blood cultures and type/cross match for blood administration
D. Assists with the admitting and discharge process.
  1. Ensures that patient rooms are ready for new admissions after cleaning by Environmental Services
  2. Completes documentation of admission vital signs height weight and other information as directed
  3. Arranges for Medicare and taxicabs for patient transport at discharge as directed
  4. Provides postmortem care
  5. Performs unittounit transfers to nonintensive care areas
  6. Participates in discharge planning rounds.
  7. May not take verbal or telephone orders
  8. May transcribe written orders which must then be signed by the registered professional nurse
  9. May accept phone report of lab results and convey results to the registered professional nurse
E. Ensures that care is provided for all patients utilizing the attributes of Careful Nursing.
  1. Trustworthy collaboration

  4. Participatory authoritative management
F. Carries out other duties related to patient care and unit operations as assigned.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing required.
  • Current LPN License as a practical nurse in the State of Illinois required.
  • Current certification in CPR required.
  • ACLS certification encouraged required within first year for critical care and ER.
  • Completion of Basic Arrhythmia Course within one 1 year of hire in critical care and ER preferred.
  • Knowledge of patients growth and development needs.
  • Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties
