Department Description:

The Department of Counseling & Marital and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego includes masters programs in Counseling (Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling specialization both CACREP accredited) and Marital & Family Therapy (COAMFTE accredited). The Counseling program enrolls approximately 70 students each year with at least half of the students coming from outofstate. The majority of students are pursuing their degrees fulltime and many receive financial assistance.The Department and USD have a strong commitment to diversity social justice and global education as well as evidencebased practices. Our student body is approximately 50 minority students and we have several grants to support historically underserved populations. SOLES is 22 Latinx and hopes to lead the university in the goal of becoming an HSI. The program has developed strong collaborative relationships with local agencies clinics and schools to provide an array of practicum sites including continuation schools youth and family service centers veterans services and culturally specific centers. In addition students are required to participate in at least one global education experience prior to graduation.

Detailed Description:

The Department of Counseling & Marital and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego is seeking applications for a fulltime visiting Professor of Practice (PoP) in Counseling position for the 9month academic appointment starting in Fall 2024 in the Counseling Program. This position is a nontenure track visiting appointment for theacademic year.

Responsibilities:The successful applicant will be expected to teach 21 units 4/3 across the academic year in core and specialization courses in the Counseling Program. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to student advising admissions curriculum assessment/development and general departmental and university service. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach basic and advanced counseling courses in the counseling program and supervise practicum/fieldwork courses.The successful applicant will: contribute to the departments mission of providing outstanding teaching research and service; have an appreciation of diverse constituencies and add to the departments commitment to diversity; have the ability to collaborate productively with students and faculty at USD; and have strong oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:The faculty is especially seeking candidates with a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and social justice as evidenced by their commitment to diversity as part of their teaching and service. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated strong teaching skills and the ability to articulate service specific to community engagement and social justice. Candidates for this position must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • a terminal degree in Counselor Education from aCACREPaccredited program.
  • experience teaching Counseling core and Clinical Counseling specialization courses is required;
  • evidence of strong or potential for graduatelevel teaching;
  • active participation in professional counseling organizations; and
  • demonstrate a strong commitment to multiculturalism and social justice.

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

  • experience working as a practicing LPC/LMHC;
  • California LPCC license eligible
  • experience teaching research methods and/or psychopharmacology courses
  • evidence of leadership in professional counseling organizations
  • experience teaching/providing clinical supervision at a high level
