This position will serve as the Prison Elimination Act (PREA) / Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Coordinator Grievance Coordinator ACA Coordinator and the Policy Review Team liaison.

Job duties include:

PREA Compliance Coordinator responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of PREA standards compliance measures and audit requirements.
  • Review of facility practices and procedures to maintain compliance with PREA standards and department policy.
  • Documentation and tracking of all sexual abuse and sexual harassment allegations reported at the facility.
  • Assist with PREA audits.
  • Serve as the facility PREA contact person.


ADA Compliance Coordinator:

  • The staff person assigned to facilitate ADA compliance at each DOC facility and investigate disabilityrelated issues and complaints made known by an inmate within the facility. The coordinator has authority to make recommendations to the Warden and ADA Coordinator and implement approved corrective actions to ensure compliance with ADA.
  • Basic knowledge of the ADA as it applies to correctional environments.
  • Review existing and proposed facility practices and procedures for compliance with ADA and this policy. Provide recommendations to the ADA Director for potential corrective action as deemed appropriate.
  • Document and track all complaints alleging noncompliance with ADA requirements made by inmates; the results of any investigation response disposition and remedies provided in response to the complaint.
  • Notify unit staff at the facility of any accommodation approved for an inmate and any required modification of facility procedure(s) that may be necessary as a result of implementing the accommodation.


Policy Review Team Liaison:

  • Facilitate weekly meetings with the facility policy review team for review of assigned DOC policies.
  • Track and record recommended changes to policies.
  • Create Implementation Adjustments (IAs) for approval based on policy review team recommendations.
  • Serve as the team liaison to the DOC Policy and Compliance Coordinator.


Grievance Coordinator:

  • Serves as the central receiving agent for inmate requests seeking remedy from the Warden or Secretary of Corrections.
  • Ensure inmates and staff adhere to established timelines for submitting requests for remedy. Investigate reported issues or concerns and generate response based on findings.
  • Distribute forms to inmates and staff.


American Correctional Association (ACA) Coordinator :

  • Basic knowledge of the ACA standards for adult correctional facilities.
  • Maintain ACA files for all applicable ACA standards and assist with ACA standard compliance implementation and recommend policy changes.
  • Performs ACA mock compliance audits and will serve as the coordinator for any national audits.


The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A bachelors degree in Criminal Justice Public Administration or a related field and/or a history of working in a correctional setting is preferred. A work history that includes the application of standards rules or regulations and demonstrates high performance strong organization skills and attention to detail is also preferred. Candidates who are customer service oriented and motivated by the desire to improve the conditions of confinement for adult inmates are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge of:

Department of Corrections policies and institutional operations memoranda and procedures;

Prisons Elimination Act standards;

American Correctional Association (ACA) standards;

Americans with Disability Act standards.

Ability to:

communicate effectively;

understand and apply federal rules and regulation to facility operations;

effectively analyze situations and exercise judgment and discretion in establishing applying and interpreting departmental policies and institution operations memoranda and procedures.

Conditions of Employment:

Successfully pass all modules of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training to include English reading comprehension relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

Use arms palms of hands and feet to deliver blows;

Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and may be exposed while on assignment;

Seize hold control or subdue violent or ive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

Demonstrate body agility strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors utilizing tactfulness and a congenial personable manner;

Work with people of the opposite sex diverse racial ethnic groups mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;

Communicate by talking listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information assignments;

Willing and able to travel;

TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;

recognize deficiencies in and recommend changes to policies operations memoranda and procedures.

This position is eligible for Veterans Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
