Job Description

St. Pauls School seeks an experienced Boiler Operator who will operate maintain and service the boilers and the Central Heating Plant. In the nonheating season provides general maintenance assistance to the Facilities group. This position will work the overnight shift from 8pm6am Tuesday Wednesday Thursday and Friday nights.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor daily operation of the boilers making adjustments as necessary. This includes both the physical
    equipment of the operation and the computer controlling software.
  • Test boiler water and add chemicals to maintain correct composition.
  • Perform routine mechanical tasks in the servicing of the steam plant equipment.
  • Assist and provide backup for the Chief Engineer.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to a variety of HVAC equipment.
  • Maintain functionality and cleanliness of the boiler rooms and facilities.
  • Provide general maintenance assistance to the various functions and craft groups of the Maintenance
    section.
  • Other duties may be assigned at any time at the discretion of the employees supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years experience operating or servicing highpressure boilers.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Basic personal computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently on reasonably complex tasks.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a harmonious working environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as technical documents and procedures.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or
    diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit stand walk reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls. Must be able to climb ladders balance stoop kneel stretch crouch and crawl and work in confined spaces.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision in use of computer screen and reading.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an
employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be

  • The work environment primarily is a boiler plant with its typical hazards and risk exposure.
  • Work in confined or limited spaces with irritants (e.g. dust and fuel oil) are to be expected.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.


Comments:

  • Normal work schedule is 40 hours per week full year four days per week with hours and schedule
    arranged by the supervisor. Overtime may be required based on the needs of the department and the
    School schedule.
  • This position may be on an evening or night shift and requires some weekend and holiday coverage.
  • Works under the general direction of a lead operator. Some independent judgment creative effort and
    resourcefulness required in making routine decisions in accordance with established policies and practices
    of the department.
