Associate Electronics Engineer

JOB SUMMARY

Requires application of electronics engineering knowledge in planning and executing design tasks having scope for independent accomplishment and coordination of assignments. Develop technical solutions to problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Assigned problems can make it necessary to apply existing criteria in accepted ways and draw conclusions from comparative situations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Electronics and systems design projects including research development and maintaining current product range.
  • Peer reviewing colleagues designs
  • Participating in formal project design reviews
  • Individual task and project using MS Project or other similar planning tools
  • Works under general direction seeks assistance as needed. Work requires consistent exercise of discretion and independent judgment. Works with team to support achievement of project milestones.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • The ideal candidate will be qualified with an engineering degree or equivalent in Electronic Engineering or similar. They will be a skilled allround electronics designer possess good communication skills and be able to demonstrate at working knowledge in the following areas:
  • Analogue design

Low noise analogue receiver front end amplifiers

Receiver Noise Figure Selectivity Gain distribution Intermodulation distortion

Receiver Dynamic Range Adjacent Channel Rejection Spurious Response Rejection

Magnetic induction mode signal acquisition

Transmitters 1W 150W Class B & Class D

Transmitter Intermodulation Spurious Emissions Adjacent Channel Power

High resolution/dynamic range realtime analogue/digital conversion

Analogue active and passive filter design

  • Digital design

Programmable devices with modern processors e.g. NXP TI and/or single board computers

Processor interfacing USB I2C SPI Ethernet HDMI RS232/485

  • Measurement & Test (bench and environmental chamber)

Oscilloscopes Spectrum Analyser Vector Network Analyser Thermal Camera

  • Switch Mode PSUs including:

Very low noise/EMI high efficiency low power

Single/multicell battery powered

Battery chargers

  • Design to meet EMC Radio and Safety regulations (e.g. EN 300220 EN61000 EN55011 EN55022
  • Circuit Simulation
  • Type approval testing
  • Design for volume manufacturing
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout

PCB multilayer layout design practices

PCB assembly

  • Debug of processorbased hardware
  • Board documentation and liaison with the software development team
  • Manufacturing test procedures and liaison with the factory ATE team

Additional/Advantageous Knowledge and Experience

  • Report writing
  • Environmental testing
  • Screened room and open air test site radiated emissions testing
  • Wireless data communication (e.g. Bluetooth WiFi)
  • Positioning technology (e.g. GPS)
  • DSPs (e.g. TMS320 family) and microcontrollers (e.g. MSP430 PICs Ardunio boards and Raspberry Pi)
  • VHDL (for FPGA design)
  • Mathematical modelling with appropriate tools (e.g. MatLab MathCAD)
  • Magnetics e.g. induction mode transmitter/receivers field theory ferrites/materials
  • Design to meet Safety standards (e.g. EN60950 EN61010
  • Design of AC to DC power supplies up to 1kW
  • Analogue circuit simulation using Spice
  • Techniques for BuiltIn SelfTest (BIST)
  • Development of scripts and code for hardware debug under embedded Linux
  • EMC approvals process for wireless devices European and FCC standards

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required Education / Experience

  • BSc BEngHND or equivalent

Preferred Education / Experience

  • MSc CEng MIET or equivalent
