Detailed Description:

Assists in the development and implementation of both the educational and the athletic component of the IRA Division I Mens rowing program. Also assists in creating and implementing the general business operations of the program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist head coach with teaching and coaching (athlete development)

  • Involvement with all administrative and organizational aspects of IRA Division I program under the supervision of the head coach.
  • Supervision of athletes in a coordinated and planned program of practices and competition with a concern for the athletes health and welfare physical and psychological preparation.
  • Assist with the organization planning and implementation of daily practices.
  • Direct onthewater coaching responsibilities (as assigned by the head coach).
  • Assist with the development and improvement of athlete skills. Work with individual players before and after practice when requested.
  • Teach outofseason individual skill sessions staying within the NCAA & IRA regulations for individual player workouts.
  • Evaluate race performances and provide information to the head coach.
  • Codevelop and oversee conditioning and weight room activities.

Recruiting (phone calls contacts evaluations emails official and unofficial visits etc.

  • Understand and keep up to date regarding NCAA/IRA/conference rules as they pertain to recruiting and eligibility.
  • Assist in the identification and recruiting of academically and athletically qualified studentathletes for admission to the University with adherence to admissions and athletic department policies and procedures.
  • Pass the NCAA Coaches recruiting test annually.
  • Identify and evaluate prospective talent through evaluation at races regattas and video.
  • Weekly phone conversations with prospects.
  • Junior recruitingIdentify prospects and followup as requested by the head coach.
  • Request transcripts from recruits and follow up with appropriate calls to registrar and high school counselors.
  • Unofficial visits Coordinate unofficial visits in keeping with appropriate NCAA & IRA regulations.
  • Official visits Coordinate official visits including travel the involvement of current players arrangements for meals and entertainment. Arrange academic meetings with faculty members and for an academic class with one of the players. Provide tours of campus.
  • Respond to leads and inquiries in a timely fashion.

Equipment and Boathouse Management

  • Clean and maintain major (shells riggers oars ergs etc. and minor (coxswain electronics hardware etc. equipment.
  • Drive boat trailer to regattas.

Team Travel Coordination

  • Coordinate air and ground transportation with authorized travel agencies.
  • Coordinate hotel accommodation with appropriate vendors.
  • Secure bus and van use with transportation coordinator.
  • Request and distribute cash advances to players and coaches and secure appropriate documentation/signatures.
  • Coordinate all video equipment.
  • Create and distribute detailed travel itineraries.
  • File expense report for team in a timely manner upon return from each away trip.

General Assignments

  • Knowledge of and adherence to all University NCAA IRA and conference rules and regulations policies and procedures with special attention to recruiting eligibility admissions and financial aid.
  • Enforce University and athletic department policies and regulations with regard to use/abuse of alcohol and by team members.
  • Maintain professional growth by attendance at appropriate meetings clinics workshops etc.
  • Assist in conference regional and national events hosted by the University when requested.
  • Assist in the organization of team and department awards presentations for studentathletes.
  • Prepare for endofseason team banquet including the creation of an endofseason video.
  • Work with the head coach and equipment manager on all uniform and equipment orders.
  • Create detailed team binder at the beginning of the academic year for each studentathlete to include schedules monthly calendars travel information blank scouting sheets team training room and travel rules and fundraising information.
  • Support program fundraising efforts through monthly newsletters weekly emails frequent social networking updates and gift acknowledgment.
  • Assist with fundraising efforts of the head coach.

  • Required to be certified to recruit offcampus by USD Athletics Compliance Staff via NCAA rules education training within 6 weeks of hire date and then each year before August 1st.
  • Valid drivers license within six weeks of employment.
  • Must be CPR/AED certified within six weeks of employment.
  • May be expected to travel for extended periods of time for athletic and recruiting events.

Background check: Successful completion of a preemployment background check.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required
  • At least 2 years experience either coaching or playing at the Division I or professional level
  • Understanding of NCAA & IRA rules and regulations
  • Employment is contingent upon the results of a background investigation.

Performance Expectations Knowledge Skills andAbilities:

  • Must be able to drive a coachs boat for multiple hours at a time
  • Must be able to safely lift and move the rowing shells.
  • Must be able to drive the shell trailer on crosscountry trips.
  • Ability to communicate and relate to 1722yearold male studentathletes
  • Organized with excellent time management skills.
  • Must be passionate and excited to develop a toplevel program for the University of San Diego.
  • Represent the University of San Diego in a professional and responsible manner.
