Job Summary
The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) will provide leadership and oversight for the strategic academic intellectual and administrative affairs of the college. Reporting directly to the provost/vice president for Academic Affairs the dean is the colleges chief academic executive and fiscal officer and a member of the Council of Deans and Academic Affairs Leadership Team. The College of Arts and Sciences provides the focus for the universitys statewide liberal arts mission. The fundamental mission of the college is to promote critical reflection and the advancement of knowledge by teaching the core curriculum; by offering comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degrees for students; and by encouraging excellence in teaching scholarly activity research and service on the part of faculty. Students are challenged to address the analytical historical cultural and philosophical foundations of their disciplines to think critically and creatively to act with ethical and aesthetic awareness and to communicate effectively in a free and open exchange of ideas.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategic Direction
Serve as the chief academic and administrative leader of the College of Arts and Sciences supervising all operations and serving as the advocate for college programs and needs.
Provide visionary leadership to ensure programs within the college are excellent relevant transformative viable for the future and supportive of the Universitys strategic plan Imagine 2030 mission and vision.
Development of short and longterm plans to advance the colleges educational objectives within the context of the Universitys vision.
Advise the Provost on all matters of programs/services budget facilities and personnel.
Faculty & Staff Management
Support and plan the ongoing development of chairs faculty and staff including faculty evaluation and feedback to faculty on performance.
Recommend the appointment salary promotion and tenure of faculty.
Recruit and employ high quality faculty and staff.
Support the faculty through mentoring programs and in achieving standards of excellence in teaching scholarship research and service to the university community and profession.
Responsible for working with the department chairs to staff all classes and the supervision of all employees in the college including administration of performance evaluations.
Academic Program Oversight
Participate in program review for evaluation of existing degrees certification and other academic programs and implementation of improvements to enhance the quality of instruction academic programs and research for the purpose of student success.
Manage college facilities and equipment in a manner that promotes quality learning in classrooms and laboratories.
Support graduates in their efforts to secure employment or gain admission to graduate/professional schools.
Implementation of improvements to enhance quality of instruction academic programs and research.
Financial Management & Resource Development
Develop recommend and administer the College budget within funding limits.
Expand and diversify funding sources through external and internal avenues in collaboration with University Advancement and the Office of Grants and Sponsored Projects.
Partner with COAS advisory boards for fundraising program reviews strategic planning and assist with professional development of majors.
Relationship Building & Communication
Foster collaborative relationships within and across the University
Maintain and strengthen strategic relationships with community alumni benefactors and private and public sector partners on behalf of the college and university
Continue to enhance networks among University System of Georgia institutions and the Deans of Colleges of Arts and Sciences.
Communicate effectively through social media with COAS stakeholders with College of Arts and Sciences alumni donors board members and friends.
Serve on governance teams and committees and perform other duties as assigned by the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
An earned terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in a discipline within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Other Required Qualifications
An awareness of current trends in higher education and experience with innovation in undergraduate and graduate teaching and learning particularly in a liberal arts education.
Exceptional organizational communication and interpersonal skills.
Required Experience
A record of excellence in teaching scholarship and service commensurate with appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure.
A strong record of progressively responsible and relevant university leadership experience.
A minimum of five years of relevant academic leadership experience including significant and progressive administration experiences at the department chair level or above.
Significant and successful experience in faculty evaluation and professional development and in managing enrollment and complex budgets.
Experience with shared governance and a consultative leadership style.
Record of successful fundraising and alumni engagement.
Experience in communicating the benefits of a liberal arts education in the 21st century.
