Job Description

Title: Classroom Assistant
Program Area: Breakthrough Youth Network
FLSA: NonExempt; Parttime
Hours: School Year: 2:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m.; Summer: 8 a.m. 1:00 p.m.
Reports to: Youth Education Director

The mission of Breakthrough is to partner with the residents of East Garfield Park to build connections develop skills and open doors of opportunity.

The Breakthrough Youth Network (BYN) aims to overcome the forces of poverty and see our students become caring and responsible community members who transform East Garfield Park into a place where success becomes the norm and families prosper.

The goal of Breakthroughs Nettie Bailey Student Achievement Program is that all students will be connected to a network of caring adults be provided a safe and supportive environment and demonstrate authentic academic growth and socialemotional skills.

Position Summary
Demonstrating the mission and vision of Breakthrough the Classroom Assistant will be a part of the Breakthrough Youth Network. This position will provide excellent organized and appropriate instruction in the Nettie Bailey Student Achievement After School Program Summer Day Camp Program and enrichment related programs for youth in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

The Classroom Assistants responsibilities include but is not limited to:
  • Attending all team meetings
  • Assisting in teaching lessons for the students in the out of school time program
  • Assisting with managing student behavior
  • Work collaboratively with the BYN team to plan and implement developmentally appropriate classroom strategies
  • Be available to be a substitute in any classroom on an as needed basis
  • Maintain an environment for students to work which is clean safe stimulating and appreciative for each childs development.
  • Assist with data entry in Salesforce Cityspan and other databases
  • Assist with classroom and building clean up
  • Assist with special events such as: Spring break programs field trips Awards Night etc.
  • Ensure that routines are carried out in a manner that is prompt and consistent with good youth development principles.
  • Independently follows agency policy and procedures
  • Participate in Breakthrough wide events such as staff meetings events and other cross department collaborations

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Employee will use general office equipment including but not limited to: telephone computer copier paper shredder paper cutter and filing systems.
  • Must possess an accurate and informed understanding of cultural and urban realities especially as related to youth families poverty and community development.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills professionalism and problem solving ability.
  • Must have the ability to use initiative discretion and independent judgment in making decisions.
  • Promote participant care through all actions and behaviors
  • Project a professional image to all internal and external customers
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and follow through and be comfortable working in a changing environment.
  • Demonstrates willingness to consistently improve work performance through their relationship and guidance.
  • Outstanding attitude willingness to learn and grow and capacity to excel in our collaborative environment.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Some college coursework in education or in any field and coursework equivalent to a major relating to youth development preferred
  • 1 Year related experience working with schoolaged children
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to walk and/or sit; use hands and fingers to feel objects tools or controls reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; regularly talk or hear. The employee must be able to bend stoop pull lift as well as have overhead extension of arms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; be able to lift carry or move at least 50 pounds. Must adhere to proper handling and lifting techniques. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Safety Requirements
Prior to the first day of work must complete a criminal background and sex offender clearance.
BENEFITS
SICK LEAVE Parttime employees in this position are eligible for 1 hour of sick pay for every 35 hours worked in a pay period. This leave can be used for medical and safety reasons.
PAID LEAVE Parttime employees in this position are eligible for 1 hour of paid pay for every 35 hours worked in a pay period. This leave can be used for any reason.
COMPENSATION
$17/hr $18/hr
