Position Duties

The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill 1 vacancy for the Engineer I/II position on the Pavement/Bridge/ADA Curb Ramps Engineering & Management. This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions in the future in other divisions or departments. The total salary range for the Engineer I/II classification is $48.37 to $69.43 hourly or $100616.88 to $144406.08 annually. This amount includes an approximate five percent 5 ongoing nonpensionable pay. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates qualifications and experience.


Infrastructure Maintenance (IM) Division Pavement/ADA Curb Ramps/BridgeEngineering
Pavement/Bridge/ADA Curb Ramps Engineering plays a critical role in the maintenance and rehabilitation of approximately 2500 30ft equivalent) miles of pavement overseeing the maintenance of approximately 250 bridges and over 29000 ADA curb ramps citywide. The Engineer I/II position for the Pavement Engineering group is responsible for delivering the Citys annual pavement maintenance projects with an annual budget of over $90 million per year. This position reports directly to an Associate Engineer and supervises Engineering Technicians and interns.

Key duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage multiple projects from planning to design procurement construction andprojectcloseout for pavement and ADA curb ramp projects.

  • Coordinatewithbothinternalandexternalstakeholderstoensureeffectiveandefficientprojectdelivery.

  • Engage with the public to address inquiries concerns and issues ina timelyand professional manner.

  • Assistin planningannual pavement and ADA curb ramp projects throughprovidingfield quantifications data collectionand verification desk reviewsandcoordinationwith various stakeholders.

  • Developprojectplansspecifications andestimatesforbothpavementand ADAcurbrampprojects.

  • Developshortterm and longtermworkplansforbothpavementand ADAcurbrampmaintenanceprograms.

  • Provide input andassistancein implementing new and innovative pavement/ADA curb ramp maintenance strategies (e.g.new processesasset management strategies).

  • Ensureaccuratedocumentation of bridge conditions inspection reports and maintenance records to support regulatory requirements.

  • Assistin bridgerelated emergency response efforts including damage assessments and coordinating repair plans.

  • Overseeinspectionsrepairs andrehabilitationprojectsfor Cityownedbridgestoensuresafetyandlongevity.

  • Superviseand mentor engineeringtechniciansandinterns.


Minimum Qualifications

Engineer I

Engineer II
  • Education:A Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in the required professional engineering designation or possession of an EngineeringInTraining (EIT) certificate AND
  • Experience: One 1 year of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience reviewing and preparing plans estimates and specifications.

Acceptable Substitution
  • Certificate of successful completion of the EngineerInTraining examination issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers Land Surveyors and Geologists may be substituted for the required education.

Required Licensing (such as drivers license certifications etc.
  • Possession of a valid State of California drivers license may be required.

Possession of a Certificate of Registration in the required engineering discipline is desirable.
