BASIC FUNCTION:
To assist in the effective management and implementation of TRIUMF Safety Programs the Dosimetry Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of the TRIUMF dosimetry program which includes both external and internal dosimetry for all applicable TRIUMF workers and reporting the results of this program to the group leader of Radiation Protection. The Dosimetry Specialist ensures compliance with the TRIUMF Dosimetry Program
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The chief responsibility of this role is to manage the Landauer dosimeter program for personnel and environmental monitoring at TRIUMF. This includes:
- Supporting the RPG group mandate by establishing maintaining and improving TRIUMFs external and internal dosimetry programs to maintain a safe workplace.
- Ensure radiation doses of TRIUMFs NEW (Nuclear Energy Workers) are properly reported to the NDR (National Dose Registry) in compliance with CNSC (Canada Nuclear Safety Commission) regulations.
- Providing technical expertise and support for all matters relating to the Dosimetry Program and associated program elements.
- Perform periodic internal reviews of the Dosimetry Program and report to senior members of Radiation Safety on identified regulatory deficiencies and opportunities for improvement and efficiencies in the program.
- Issuing dosimeters as identified in the onboarding process ensuring the accuracy of the information and completing the data entry for the external dosimeterservice provider database.
- Tracking changes throughout the wear period and updating as required by both the TRIUMF and external service provider database in preparation for the quarterly dosimeter changes.
- Coordinating TRIUMF staff to ensure completion of the changeover at the end of each wear period sending dosimeters in for processing and uploading reports to the TRIUMF dosimeter database.
- Administering record and report updates for the environmental dosimeters which are on a semiannual change period.
- Providing annual budget estimates to the RSO for the management of the Dosimetry Program and work with the finances and procurements team to ensure all obligations are met with regard to radiation dosimeters.
Additional dosimetry related responsibilities include the administration of all aspects of the TRIUMF dosimetry program including maintenance of the directread dosimeter program such as:
- Ensuring dosimetry stations are properly stocked and maintained (computers and networking included).
- Provide training to TRIUMF staff and visitors in the appropriate use of direct reading dosimeters and to properly record the radiation dose in the dose management system.
- Maintenance and review of delineated areas where dosimetry must be worn.
- Calibration of directread electronic and analogue dosimetry including the storage and maintenance of all records generated by the process.
- Coordinating the calibration of dosimetry requiring external service providers for instance neutron modules for electronic dosimeters.
- Coordinating maintenance of and the addition of novel features to the TRIUMF dosimetry application with IS&T developers.
- Acts as the goto troubleshooter for problems arising with the TRIUMF dosimetry application.
- Supports the RPG group leader with NEW training by assisting with Advanced Radiation Protection Training as needed.
The incumbent will also be required to contribute dosimetryspecific information or reports to the Radiation Safety Officer for the relevant regulatory reporting requirements.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Education training and experience providing technical support for internal and external dosimetry programs; and the willingness to attend continuing education and professional development as recommended by either the RPG group leader or RSO or designee.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Flexibility in dealing with changing priorities and interruptions.
- Knowledge of EHS requirements for dosimetry and generally for workplace safety.
- Proficiency with computers and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word Excel and data management software related to dosimetry programs and systems.
- A good comprehension of scientific terminology related to accelerator operations radiological safety and internal/external dosimetry programs.
- Working knowledge of radiation safety principles and practices as well as current rules and regulations of the CNSC and other regulatory agencies.
- Knowledge of the safeguarding of personal information in accordance with the Government of Canadas privacy legislation and policies.
NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:
The position requires the incumbent to be trained as a NEW. TRIUMF will provide training to the successful candidate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
- Undergraduate degree in Radiation Physics or similar with a good standing in science/technical courses at the secondary level.
- At least 8 years experience working in a scientific laboratory or a relevant Environment Health and Safety position.
- At least 8 years of experience in working with radiation dose management systems (i.e. myLDR DOSISERV or others)
