General Summary

The hiring amount will be between $21.88 $23.28 an hour.This is a nonexempt temporary (variable/limitedhour) position and is not eligible for city benefits.

Please note that this position supports summer programming and selected individual(s) should be available during the summer program of June 9August 8 2025. Planning and preparation for the summer program may start several weeks prior and selected individual(s) may assist in that preparation.

This Youth Counselor Assistantprovides direct care and support for youth enrolled in the Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP) and the Teens GIVE Service Learning Program. In Teens GIVE the primary function involves supervising organizing and facilitating community service and recreational activities for groups of teens. In CAYIP the primary function involves case management job coaching and work place readiness counseling. Other responsibilities may include group facilitation transportation and administrative projects as needed to support the program; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under direct supervision.

Performs responsible human support work involving child management; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under direct supervision within one functional area and of a routine nature. Functional areas may include: case management and supervision/facilitation of activities or transportation related services.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provides direct services for youth enrolled in the Teens Give Program and Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP) and may help with curriculum development for CAYIP and Teens GIVE.
  • Performs child management tasks; maintains behavioral norms and routines.
  • Facilitates skill building and support groups including workplace readiness workshops for CAYIP participants.
  • Models a positive attitude and solution orientation towards problems and decisions.
  • Run errands and perform clerical work as needed.
  • Responds to emergency incidents.
  • Attends staff meetings and other required meetings.
  • May provide oncall coverage.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Depending on functional area assignment:

  • May provide facilitation and supervision of community service and recreational activities.
  • May provide assistance with case management services and/or curriculum development for youth enrolled in Teens GIVE and CAYIP.
  • May develop activity schedules and daily group rosters; coordinate with community service site supervisors.
  • May evaluate performance and document youth progress in electronic records keeping system including but not limited to assisting in evaluating satisfaction and performance outcomes.
  • May assist in the cultivating of site partnerships and marketing of programs.
  • May have responsibility for a support function such as: equipment maintenance stocking inventories of supplies and oversight of vehicle maintenance.
  • May transport program participants if applicable.

Education Experience and Skills

Minimum Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency required;
  • General knowledge of or experience with working with youth and/or previous life and work experience which reflects the ability to provide supervision and support to youth and their families;
  • Possession of a valid drivers license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or qualified and able to obtain a valid VA drivers license prior to beginning the position. Proof of insurance.(To view our driving eligibility requirements visit Qualifications:

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Some knowledge of adolescent behavior; some knowledge of crisis intervention and behavior change techniques; some assignmentspecific knowledge: clerical maintenance operations community facilities; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with adolescents families other workers and community agencies; ability to offer support while implementing structure and giving clear expectorations; ability to manage and supervise adolescent behavior in group setting; ability to keep accurate records. Knowledge of and ability to engage in traumainformed care and practices; be dedicated to creating an inclusive and equitable environment; and be dedicated to providing inclusive and equitable service to youth and families. Competent skills in counseling adolescents; Ability to maintain calm under pressure and a fastpaced environment; Enjoy being active constantly; Desire to help others.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor:LIGHT WORK: Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires the ability to lift or move more than 20 lbs. for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time the job is rated for light work. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work.

The majority of time spent in this position involves inside work. May be required to work weekends mornings afternoons evenings and/or oncall. Position subject to driving a city vehicle and to the vehicle use policy and procedures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Position may require frequent travel to and from community based locations. Work contacts may include coworkers supervisors community service site personnel referring agents children and their families.
