Department Summary

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence universal access engagement and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

UESS departments and programs include: the Accessible Education Center (AEC); Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CURE) Office of Distinguished Scholarships (ODS) and McNair Scholars Program; Academic Residential Communities (ARCs) FirstYear Interest Groups (FIGs) and Student Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL); Office of Academic Advising (OAA) PathwayOregon and Student Support Services; Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center; and UESS Administration.

Position Summary

The Vice Provost (VP) reports to the Provost and is responsible for setting the strategic direction for undergraduate student success efforts at the University of Oregon. Working directly with the President Provost deans directors and other campus administrators this position designs and implements an aggressive universitywide strategy for the elimination of institutional barriers and the continual improvement of undergraduate student retention and degree completion rates.

The position is responsible for developing and implementing strategic priorities; for developing and implementing strategic student success priorities for advising academic support and other student services; for developing and implementing a comprehensive firstyear experience including coordinating the design of curricular programs such as Academic Residential Communities (ARCs) FirstYear Interest Groups (FIGs) and the Common Reading Program; and for facilitating reform of relevant university policies and procedures. The VP collaborates with the Office of the Provost Deans Institutional Research Student Services and Enrollment Management Student Life Equity and Inclusion the University Senate Information Technology UO Advancement and other campus bodies to develop promote and execute overarching evidencedbased student success student engagement and timely graduation initiatives.

The VP provides leadership to strategic initiatives related to the university strategic plan in particular enhancing pathways to timely graduation. The Division includes the Academic Advising the Accessible Education Center the Teaching and Learning Center FirstYear Programs the Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement and other related programs and offices.

The VP also oversees the implementation and leveraging of the campuss primary student success tools including but not limited to EABs Student Success Collaborative Campus (SSC Campus) and SSC Guide (a student facing application).

Minimum Requirements

Masters degree.
Five years of experience in administrative positions within higher education.
Experience implementing new programs and policies at an institution of higher education.
Experience managing student support services or advising programs at a public research university.

Professional Competencies

Detailed knowledge of national trends developments and innovations in student success.
Experience in strategic and longrange planning.
Experience in the management of multiple projects.
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills in English and a demonstrated ability to make presentations to small and large groups.
Ability to use and understand data from a variety of sources.
Ability to lead project teams and to work cooperatively as a team member.
Ability to work effectively with faculty staff and students from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to handle conflict and complex situations in a professional manner and to achieve consensus.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional graduatelevel training in areas relevant to student success and/or institutional research and assessment.
Understanding of the University of Oregon or a similarlysituated institution.
Terminal degree.
