The PhD project will investigate how social robots can be given Social Awareness i.e. how they can track the situation around them the people who are there and their intentions and how this awareness can be used by the robot to take part in multiparty interaction. It will also investigate how the robot can reliably generate social behaviours in adaptation to the social behaviour of the persons it is interacting with. The project will involve both data collection and evaluation development of machine learning models and the practical implmentation of those models in a social robot platform.
The PhD position will be part of the Marie SkodowskaCurie European Training Network on Social aWareness for sErvice roboTs (SWEET) within the Horizon Europe Programme.
The network will train 15 DCs in the context of research and development for Socially Aware Robotics. The SWEET consortium is formed by 10 beneficiaries including 7 academic and 3 nonacademic organizations plus 15 partner organizations to cover a full training programme on scientific technical and personal development skills which will include secondments in current worldleading countries (Spain Germany UK Italy Sweden France South Korea Japan) to gather the necessary knowledge and implement it in Europe.
This position will be an industrial PhD position at Furhat Robotics with both a company supervisor (Gabriel Skantze) as well as an academic supervisor and a PhD enrollment at Universit degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Italy. The candidate will spend 50 of their total contracted time 36 months) in a mandatory secondment at other partners/beneficiaries identified by the project (Universitt Hamburg and cole nationale suprieure de techniques avances Paris).
