Job Summary:

The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform onsite roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination dispatcher/train communication and various types of OnTrack Safety in controlled and noncontrolled track areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements granting permission for trains and ontrack equipment to proceed through limits
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms including but not limited to: a job setup form for each flagging assignment daily work reports invoices and other reports as required
  • Handle and place signs derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day
  • Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
  • Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding the various assignments and schedules
  • Other duties assigned or required to meet the business needs

Qualifications

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to meet the required physical demands and complete necessary tasks.
  • Effective in warning roadway workers of the approach of trains.
  • Understanding of ontrack safety training and qualification requirements for protected roadway workers.
  • Proficient in radio communication procedures with RWIC/EICs (Employees in Charge).
  • Capable of conducting job briefings with all roadway workers at their location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Skilled in installing railroad derails and applying locking devices.
  • Proficiency with electronic communications including email and text as well as standard office applications (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Minimum of 6 years of Class 1 Railroad experience within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • 8years of railroad track maintenance experience.
  • Prior experience working within a railway company.
  • Training in railway Track Inspection Guidelines or equivalent.
  • Prior frontline first responder experience is a plus.

Additional Qualifications Certifications etc.:

  • CPKC OnTrack Worker and Operating Rules.
