Job Description
Primary Purpose
The Captioner is responsible under the direction of Disability Services management provides postproduction captioning services for students with auditory processing disabilities in lecture and lab classes exams discussions and related activities both online and on campus. The captioner accepts responsibility for knowledge of and adherence to the ethics of transcribing and the role of the educational transcriber.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Provide postproduction captioning services for students with auditory processing disabilities in lecture and lab classes exams discussions and related activities both online and on campus. Prepare for classes by reading and becoming familiar with technical vocabulary and content. Establish and maintain a good working relationship with students staff and/or offsite agencies as may be required by the assignment. Stay abreast of new developments and techniques in the speechtotext services. Troubleshoot and diagnose basic problems with computer equipment. Perform minor maintenance and repair on equipment as necessary.
Minimum Requirements
Level 1 Novice Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: Six months experience of classroom transcribing and/or captioning experience at the postsecondary level. Level 2 Education: Associates degree or equivalent. Experience: 5 years experience of classroom transcribing and/or captioning experience at the postsecondary level. Level 3 Education: Bachelors degree or equivalent. Experience: 2 years experience of classroom transcribing and/or captioning experience at the postsecondary level.
