Job Description

Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Bloomfield College of Montclair State University seeks a dynamic and innovative scholar to join our interdisciplinary Humanities area as a tenuretrack Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will contribute to our mission of fostering a rich and inclusive academic environment that prioritizes the intellectual cultural and social development of students. This position is an exciting opportunity to advance research and teaching on issues central to the African diaspora Africa and related fields within the context of a PBI.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Africana Studies including introductory and advanced courses related tothe candidates area of specialization.

  • Develop and revise curriculum to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of Africana Studies and its relevance tocontemporary issues.

  • Develop communitybased programming to engage students in experiential learning.

  • Maintain an active research agenda including publication in peerreviewed journals and other scholarlyoutlets.

  • Mentor and advise students particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds in their academic andprofessional development.

  • Engage in service activities within the department the institution and the wider academic community.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to promote Africana Studies and its contributions to thebroader curriculum and institutional mission

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Ph.D. in African American History African American Studies or a closely related field (degree must becompleted by the start date).

  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and research particularly in an interdisciplinary context.

  • A strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students including but not limited to firstgeneration college students and students from underrepresented communities.

  • Evidence of an active research agenda with publications in journals or presses.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience teaching and mentoring students with a wide range of backgrounds experiences and perspectives including historically underserved populations firstgeneration and nontraditional students.

  • Experience integrating highimpact practices with teaching.

  • Demonstrated commitment to community engagement public history or servicelearning initiatives.

  • Experience with interdisciplinary teaching and collaboration and the ability to connect Africana Studies to other fields such as ethnic studies gender studies or public policy.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience

STARTING DATE:September 1 2025
